is that fotoshop baby,,or real:?:

He's the real deal.
Note his body size and the "old man belly" he is sporting.....he is a MATURE bull.
No lankiness to his build...just big and thick.
So, when a set of bone sits on such a huge frame and the antlers still look big.............any die hard trophy elk hunter KNOWS right now and appreciates that this dude is a stud.
Love his pallimated royal and the bit of junk.....he's got it all going on.
Wonderful bull.
With an incredible backdrop.
Just an AMAZING picture when you think about it.

Not sure if he is going to be in the four hunny + range but regardless, he's something else. Looks like he's on the regress, large burls.....brow, bez are not to or past his nose making them in the 16"- 18" range by the looks of it. He will end up on the top side of the high threes for sure. He just has a ton of character, thus my reasoning in posting him up.

Was there a fence around those Alberta Prairie bulls?

stoneguide
07-21-2012, 10:42 PM
Just a regular old 4 wire cattle fence. They are on the Suffield bombing range and can be hunted on a draw as long as they leave the base which a few do. Usually a few book bulls killed there every year. With the odd 400" bull being killed. There are a few areas like this to hunt big bulls in Alberta still. Our mountain zones have drastically gone down hill but these prairie herds with very limited predator populations are doing very well.

Not enough for Ourea to pull the trigger. Fighting hpothermia, soaked to the bone, I called in a similar sized bull to five yards, only to have O say "Nope, too small...."

An Alberta Prairie Bull taken farther south, from the same herd as the one in my avatar. This Old guy was Huge. His skull measured 10% larger the high end for a mature Rocky Mountain Elk. This southern herd is believed to be Manitoban Elk.

Memories do fade. Sometimes on purpose to lessen the pain. ;)

I figured it was 4-5 yards, had my knife unsheathed for self defense. As there was no shot when he came into the open, I figured you were asleep, and I wasn't going to let the bull finish off what he was there to do. Oh yah, and IIRC, you judged him to be 375.

360 hurts less.

That was an amazing area to get an elk draw in. There was a purported 410" - 415" running around the year we were there. We sure turned down a lot of trophy bulls trying to get that one.
What a great experience.
Strictly from my own personal view it was a shame to see that go GOS.
For any hunter to experience what we did would be a thrill of a lifetime for most hunters.

35 days and we'll be pushing those buggers to react. Not just taking and looking at pictures. I love the intensity of close in encounters with the bull elk in the bow hunt. Working hard, covering ground. The strategy, paying close attention to all the factors that bring it together, or may cost you to lose the one shot you get. Predicting their move while carefully making your own. Knowing when to call to keep them interested, wondering if you were too aggressive, or if they've just gone silent..... and then the monkey chuckle..... Ahhh, good times are close.

I should get some pics from a buddy who used to raise them.
Several years ago he had a couple 380s running around that escaped, they wouldn't come close enough to catch and he wasnt able to lure them back into a fenced area but were always hanging out in the back field. He finally 'sold' them to a couple guys to come whack them on his private land for $2500 before hunting season rolled around lol
He sold a 3 year old bull to some game farm in the states for $110K... back when they were worth something. Unreal genetics/nute's
Had a guy in bear camp this year who paid $6500 for a whitetail hunt, canned. On the drive out he saw a 180 something, he asked how much it was and they said $15K.. he shot it. Stayed a couple more days to drink and talk about his 'hunt'
Next morning driving out he saw another one, 220" class... $20K. He shot that too LOL
His wife was pissed... $46,500 for 3 whitetails lmf-ao

I see you are from kelowna.
With over twenty+ bulls taken out of the 8~9 herd every year, bulls don't stand much of a chance of ever making it past three or four years of age sadly enough.
No surprise your only getting rag horns on your trail cam.

i seem to find a few on my tcam that are bigger than rag-horns almost every year! i think the elk are expanding and becoming more abundant each year.

Some people's assessment or term "raghorn" can be subjective.

Elk numbers in the area are stable to increasing and are finding their way into new areas.
This is well noted.
Harvest has gone from a traditional trend of 8 - 12 bulls a year for decades to well into the 20's per year the last several.
It is impractical to think that if you shoot out 70+ bulls out of a smaller herd in three years that it will have no affect on the overall age composition of the bulls.

I think I've seen this one. Did he not find it dead, stuck in the mud. Dakota's I think.

Bugler, if I recall this bull was found stuck in the mud but alive. They managed to pull him out but he bedded right away and soon died. What an amazing bull.....so incredibly unique.

It is impractical to think that if you shoot out 70+ bulls out of a smaller herd in three years that it will have no affect on the overall age composition of the bulls.

is there a place you can find how many bulls were taken out of each region? I heard there was not very many bulls taken out of region 8-9 like 6 or 7?

I respect that ur a puritan.

I started this thread to appreciate elk and their beauty,.......... not for the content to be critisized.
:cry:It's August, I can only look at so many threads about powdering ur bits and pieces and other desperate, yet warranted, attempts to keep members ammused.
Pictures of incredible animals that are posted up to help pass time and spawn enthusiasm for the up coming elk season are a good thing.

Now.........Go kill another another giant mule deer this season and leave us hapless elk hunters alone ;)

You could do an easy google search and find lots of pics of wild elk. Why throw in the herford feedlot bulls into what could have been a good thread? I personally don't find tame elk with ear tags remotely appealing. I'd much rather look at dink wild raghorns than Roid freaks that were born in a test tube and are being sold to the highest bidder in a canned hunt where the feed bucket is in the killshot.

Are you referring to the pic above? It is posted on page 3 of this thread, with a running mate. These are wild elk from a certain southwestern state. I have other pics of the pair showing the wide open, military training landscape.

And I concur, a farmed elk is not a Gorgeous Bull, no matter how big the antlers are.

That thing is a pisssscutter if I ever seen one. Hey Ourea do you bow hunt?

I used to.
Have a take down.

With more early season bow opportunities being afforded the elk hunter I need to get back after it.
I have a project that I need to wrap up. Once it's up and running my season will be starting on Sept 1 for elk....not the 10th any more.

Still believe the best time to call in a monster bull is late August/early Sept when pecking orders are being established and before any cows start coming into estrous.

Just a quick FYI to the elk hunters out there.
I have a cell cam set up on a transition area in a very remote area.
I had been receiving pictures everyday ......pretty much the same customers repeatedly.
Until last night and this morning.
Three different bulls at different times sauntered by.
My take is they are getting restless now with the pre-rut and starting to cover some ground checking out the haunts.

Good luck bow hunters!

Moons ago we had to "cleans" this fella from the gene pool.

It is our opinion that this particular herd was over harvested back in the day due to the 3 point season that was the flavor at that time.
Eventually the harvest went way down to only several animals per season.
Then, the bulls that we did see started showing crazy abnormalities like this fella.
Now that we are back to a 6 point restriction we see less and less of the junkie bulls.

He may not be gorgeous ......but he sure is unique!

Thanks for posting up that top 20 link Dude. A guy forgets how few over 400 typ bulls there are. As posted from camp on Sat as I waited for a rtn phone call for back-up, I stuck an elk. Only 2 others are privy to our honey hole location, one was flying up north and the other denied my request because the canola was good to go. Priorities ?! Had to go it alone. Oh well.

I was going to tell the whole long story, it's a gooder, but I just ain't got the time when I can only type 2-3 wpm. I bugled first thing and all was quiet. hmm. Started working my way towards prime wapiti country looking for sign and always listening. After bout half mile, I bumped one on the trail. He moved off but still stuck close for maybe 10 or so min cuz of the calls I was giving him. Wouldn't come in. Then off to the NW, the silence was broken by a poor soul that decided to shoot his mouth off. He called a couple more times while I was working around him to get the wind in my face and when I got to a clearing downwind I decided to blow the estrus whine at him. Instant response. Started to go at him, and I thought, don't get in the thick shit cus if he comes in hot, u are buggered. Went back to where I was. Good decision, he's coming fast. So I am standing there waiting , bow in one hand, call in the other and daydreaming when a loud SNAP breaks me out of it. Panic, he coming in hot and he's on late final. Arrow out and knocked, release on and checked, full draw and tawny and chocolate are flashing in front of my eyes. I see him trot in the last 20 or so yrs and look at the horns and figure it's a shooter. He pulled up broadside at 11 yrds and started ranking some willows in front of him. It wasn't a gimme, I had to shoot through a willow clump that was in line right behind his front leg, but I did manage to thread the needle. Pulled the trigger at 745 and was admiring him at 830.

What I seen when I finally looked up from the blood trail and panned right.

According to the "source", It is another Alberta prairie bull. The elk are spreading across the flatland quickly, and new areas are opening up to hunting. This bull came from a zone that has it's first elk season last year.
