When I saw him yesterday, I thought there was a thread on here about him. I had tried to see him in the summer but guess I didn't have my timing right. Here is the Talbot Lake bull hard horned (same as the velvet bull in the OP). Would love to see the bull that bust him up so bad. Guess I'll have to give up a few days of my hunting season this Sept and do a photoshoot when these bulls are going hard at it.

Anyone want to throw out some guesses what these 2 bulls might score. I'm assuming the heavier bull isn't going to score really good because his mains are so short this year. Looks like age has got him on the downhill slide. The wide bull looks like he would score high to me. I'd like to hear what some experienced elk nuts would get for numbers on him.

I think he would throw up decent numbers Dana.
Tough to be accurate from a couple pics.

My thoughts.....
Brow, bez...a little weak.
Trez's are ok
Royal, sur-royal...good.
Don't know what his sixth would end up.
Good beam length.

Most focus on the top end....but the real numbers come from your first three points.
Average bulls are 12"-13" fronts......change that into 18"-19" and you just gained 36" on your gross vs focusing on a long royal.

Should be an easy breezy 340" - 350".....could squeak another 10" maybe, tough to say from a couple pics.

His burls are not large so I would say he is just starting to come into his prime.
I personally think he will only add inches in the next several years to come.

Regardless.......simply put...... he's just a ........"Gorgeous Bull"........

Great pics Dana.

Ourea,
Thanks for the imput. I certainly don't claim to be a whiz at scoring elk. Even an old dog can learn a new trick every now and then. Judging from the bedded pics, what would you guess his width to be?

Again, tough to be held to the fire on a couple pics......but....

Most decent mid class bulls you can count on being on/around 40" wide inside.
This bull looks above "decent mid class" for width.

....42"...maybe even as much as 43/44" wide.

Once again...."Gorgeous Bull" .

Good info! I haven't seen too many bulls of this caliber over the years. He looked big, just didn't know how big. It was interesting seeing 2 years of the other bull and seeing how much he has lost this year. The mass in his tines are pretty darn impressive though, especially from a distance of 5 yards. :) It was a challenge but I was able to keep the hoards of tourists out of the pictures but I'm sure I'm in many cell phone pictures with these bulls now. ;)

Sure all the elk hunters are starting to get fired up so I will add a little fuel to the fire.
Friend of mine wanted an elk so I took him out with video cam in hand.
This was back when I used to call.

Not very often a bull "gives it up" like this but he was rut crazed.
Enjoy.

Calling in bulls can be fun.
The Pide Piper approach in areas that are seeing more and more pressure is not the way to go, nor is it the way to get tight when you want to have a look.

Read nothing into the absence of the G2's on that bull.

The only reason I posted it up is that the video is clear and shows just how suicidal Juvie bulls can be.

My hunting partner for that trip had a few served up on his lap but not the piggy he was hoping for.
Fun trip though.

Gold,..... based on endless yrs of observation.

Many purport that the rut happens the same time of the yr ....every yr.
Utter bullshit.

I'm pretty new to hunting elk but am going on a trip in sept, I noticed the bull was missing the g2 and have heard of guys counting from the 4th main point and counting 2 behind it to make 6.
just goes to show that you definitely have to be 100 percent sure in counting all 6 points.

by the way, great pictures and videos from everyone! I'm getting excited about trying to bugle in my first bull!

Ourea , that is so true.Last year the new moon was on aug 31. The next few days were pretty action packed for me. This year new moon falls 4th or 5 th I think. With that being said I even notice a difference with the bulls on camera, they Are about 3 or 4 days behind on rubbing there velvet off then they were last year.

Having seen some of the bulls you chase, ..... that's a lot of velvet!!

The rut does happen the same time every year in BC. It can change by a couple days depending on cow body condition but not much more. Survival of the following springs' calves depends on it. Radio collars, GPS collars, reproductive tracts, spring ground counts and even ultra sound now confirm that. If, as some of the ek hunters like to believe, calves were dropped a month late in the spring due to the rut occurring a month late the overwhelming majority of them would die in the winter. Timing with spring green up is critical to ensure the highest possible survival rate.

"Bull action" is a hunters judge of the rut and daytime activity can be effected by the number of hot cows in an area and temperature.

We agree to disagree on this.
We have numerous examples of new born calf elk on camera that are weeks and weeks apart in development.

358mag and I watched a bull dogging a cow that was obviously in heat.
He could have cared less about the other cows in the group.
He bred her.
It was Nov 10th.

Does this mean that all the cows we have seen bred in mid to late oct over the years do not conceive?
Only the cows that are bred in the third week in Sept successfully calf come the spring?

Again, I disagree based on years of observation and field examples.

Those are yearlings or second or third estrous cows which weren't bred on their first cycle. It isn't that they don't conceive, the problem is the survival rate for calves born from yearlings is much lower than older cows, and second and third estrous calves typically do not survive the winter. Same with all other ungulates including sheep, deer and moose. If you have a significant lack of sperm you will have late cows, late calves and it will create a population decline. The other problem with a population with a lot of cows being bred in the second and third estrous is extremely high bull mortality due to a prolonged rut. It can send the population into a real tailspin - the is most obvious with sheep and moose. Elk and deer not so much.

We've all seen late cycling deer, moose and elk. Seen a 6 pts breed a cow Oct 31 up north, obviously was missed twice. The chances of that calf surviving its first winter are less than slim.

GoatGuy
09-02-2013, 11:27 AM
The other issue with late born calves is not only winter mortality but predation risk as neonates. Ungulates try to drop all of their 'young' during the same week to ensure predation risk is as low as possible. By spreading the calf drop out over a month you end up with significantly higher predation as well.

These are issues that can really affect wildlife populations without hunters noticing. A significant number of late born young is a sign of a population where the male component is probably being over-harvested. That is why we have post-season sex ratio targets.

Ourea

You stated that there are late born calves.
That means there are late bred cows.

That is the only point i was making.

Therefore the "rut" is not a seven day event and then someone turns out the lights and puts up the closed sign.

As always, your endless flow of data is appreciated.

Let's keep 'er on track and get back to those big bulls!!!

Yes, you are correct, lots of data on this although the bigger bulls do not participate as much in the second estrous although it can be far more 'fun' for the hunter as competition is much higher just the same as the beginning when there are few cows in estrous.

Congratulations Nick. Don't know which one of your rat pack was the trigger man but good on all of you.
Knowing your approach I am sure you put a lot of effort into preparation, scouting and the actual hunt.

You've set the bar reasonably high for just coming out of the gates.
Way to go guys and........

Dana, thanks for your contribution to this thread.
I started it to be all about great bulls and to motivate and inspire those that chase trophy elk.
Your recent photos support this objective and thread.
Well done and thank you.

I know you have got one incredible buck on your radar right now so thanks for straying to elk ...... I hope you lay eyes on that monster Mulie this season as he is a truly epic.

Having said that, hope you get the elk bug and start to invest in hunting them hard.
Big bulls can become obsessive.......just sayin.

As for me, I will probably eat yet another tag due to being overly fussy.

Awesome pics as always Dana, Id be out there chasing them right now if I still had a tag. :-D

mark...congrats on ur bull. Sure there will be a never ending story about ur hunt as usual.

Hope no one hits the hero button on this thread with some long drawn out self serving story.

Keep it about bulls, gorgeous bulls.
Not about personal attention.

To those that have dumped some tremendous bulls this yr.....congratulations.

To those that haven't......still 19 days left......good luck.

At first blush the brows on that bull look uber impressive.
It "appears" that his brows well exceed the length of his snout and have some serious mass.
The minute you see brows and bez's like that chances are you are looking at tremendous scoring elk.
That indicator says this bull could be something very special.
It's just one picture but it certainly has my attention.

Great post bearass.

Here is the guy who got me in sh*t last year. I spent most of my time in Sept chasing him and let 9 elk walk because of him. Wife was not happy as she thinks hunting is to fill the freezer, not the wall........ Never saw him the rest of the season. It amazes me how much they can grow in a few months. Yes the date is right.

Here is hardhorned at the watering hole, click on the picture, it's a crapy video, you get the idea.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/Sitkaspruce/2013%20Game%20Camera/th_PICT0410_zps3ceb171f.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/Sitkaspruce/2013%20Game%20Camera/PICT0410_zps3ceb171f.mp4)

Just got back into this area as the creek was too high to access until a couple weeks ago. The waterhole is no more. We had a huge wind storm back in Jan (137k winds), the hole is now filled in with blowdown....might pack the saw back in there and do some cleanup as the elk are still around, can smell them.

Nice bulls everyone!!!

Cheers

Spent a full day packing in a couple cams and blocks to a remote scent pit yesterday.
Threw a cell cam on it as I am not to keen on having to make this hike often.
Backed it up with a secondary cam set to video.

As you can see from the date stamp it didn't take long to get some love.
He's just a youngster but nice to see instant rewards from a cam.

I am posting the pic as this youngster is already clean of velvet and rubbed!?

We will get to the big stuff shortly.

wouldn't north be a little earlier than down south? just based on the weather being colder wouldn't that make things happen slightly earlier?

dana
08-13-2014, 09:01 PM
Nope because down south in places like Arizona they don't have to use up precious body stores to survive in the winter like they do up here. Therefore they are rapidly growing antlers while our elk are replenishing their bodies on the spring lush. Our elk are delayed more in antler growth and therefore typically won't shred the velvet until the last few days of August.

I've found when it's an older bull they strip off earlier. I had a fully formed 6x4 on my trail cam back in the first week of July. He had scars on his nose and a split ear. It's these older bulls that often get the bugling going for us in bow season. Still wanting a piece of the action, but playing in the outfield.

Exact same pattern I found last year as well. Aug 18 they are fully out of velvet with different bulls hitting the Salt and Mineral blocks daily. The March for cows was on.

Its getting close to elk season and I am sure there are some out there getting pretty fired up.

I'm not much for posting field pics, let alone mine, but here's my last half decent bull.

And Goat Guy, I hope you take some solace in the fact that I actually posted one of my more recent kills (statute of limitations has expired).......so stop grinding me for "not posting".

Any elk hunters that care to post some pics to help fan the flames of anticipation for the upcoming season.....have at 'er!

Do you have a head on pic of that Bull???
Could be a little hard to get fired up when you post that, sort of a high bar to reach!
But having a bull come in from bugling or cow calls always makes for a lot of fun, even if it ends up being a 5 pt.!Q
Thanks for sharing!

Pretty tough to keep a secret in today's world of social media and real time information FD.
Thanks for respecting the confidentiality of the animals we kill.

Special thanks to 358's son who helped with the disgusting pack out of that bull.
I went back to get the last load of the head and cape .....legs were a bit hot after packing all day.
I ended up going for a nasty fall with the heavy load and knocked myself out, stone cold.
I remember coming to with my hand pushing down on a rock that, at the time, I thought was an alarm clock.

It took a while to regain my faculties and get my legs under me.
The best comparison would be like trying to operate a toy when the batteries are low.
358's son, elk-alholic, came back looking for me as I was getting long overdo.

He found me struggling under the pack and mumbling away.
Guess I was still pretty scrambled.
He relieved me of the pack and pounded down the mnt with the 100+ lbs as only he can.

That was a very long day.

That bull I killed is yesterday's news.

Its from an area I don't waste much time on anymore due to excessive pressure and the resulting over harvest.
There will always be the odd hidden gem in pressure areas but they just become so difficult to hunt.

Never saw this guy during the season. Another guy with a cam got picks of him in Nov, so he made it. The guy figured he was a 370-380 bull, possibly even bigger.

This picture was in late June, I could only imagine what he grew to be. The other bull with him turned out to be the one posted above, so look how much he grew.

So Snowbrush, I didnt known they ate it in the summer. Most ungulates love it in the winter. Good to know, gotta love burns. I bet there are some hiddy holes left in that big famous burn that the elk know better than the hunters do. Imo a big bull can and does live right under our noses just like a whitetail can, noctural, with every move calculated. Not many but just a few smart ones.
