View Full Version : Would You Shoot This Buck?

That's the question I was faced with not 3 hours ago. I had been camped in my spot since 1:30 PM and at around 5:20PM this guy decided to appear downwind of me. A couple squirts of doe piss out the window and he was on his way.

At the end the video cuts out abruptly as he was getting into my shooting lane and I was ready to go. I held this buck in my crosshairs, gun loaded, finger on trigger at about 40-50 yards for a minute or so and then decided not to shoot. The fact that he was out, without a doe and the lookout for one leads me to believe there is a much bigger buck or 2.

I say 5x5 in the video he was actually a 6x5.

Would not have hesitated. Would have put the crosshairs on his white throat patch and dumped him where he stood...

He would be on the ground no doubt, but then again animals like that never walk out in front of me like that.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Keep in mind the first bit of footage that deer is about 500+ yards away. My camera has a good zoom.

No the deer aren't scared of the truck... But I have also been hunting the same patch for a few years, park in the same spot, day-in day-out and the deer are now used to it. It takes a little while for the bucks to get used to it but they do. It took that buck about 15 minutes from time I spotted him to the time he was right in front of me upwind. He kept trying to wind me so I just sprayed copious amounts of doe estrus out the window. He'd curl his lips and keep on coming!

Bucks make silly decisions when they are hunting tail. It's just a matter of setting yourself up in the right spot and capitalizing on THEIR mistake when they make it. That buck made a BIG mistake by walking right down that road like that... Usually a mature whitey buck will hug the tree line or stay just inside. It could have been the end for him!

Happy Hunting!

One thing is about not taking the shot.

You get to hunt him another day

He didn't look really wide, but he did look heavy in the rack. Myself I to would have probably dumped him. But I don't live where i can hunt white tails every day.

Good on ya for passing though. Its the only way to shoot a bigger one.

Really depends upon the person, me I would have taken the shot, but if your looking for a booner or something, then no. Dont know the calibur of deer you see, but if that deer in your pic means anything about a regular buck to you, then pass :D

Great vid tho

Depends on wether you want meat or a trophy. Good meat buck but not a trophy whitetail. About as wide as the ears on the outside and short tined might score 130 or so on a good day.

That buck would have certainly gotten the lead treatment if he was in my crosshairs but i don't hunt in whitey country to often.. Good work on the pass hopefully you get that big one thats pushin all the does!

yup that would be the biggest deer I'd ever shot! On the other hand maybe I'd wait to get a smaller more tender one! ;-) Hope you get what you want

11-14-2006, 12:52 PM

Maybe you should market "Doe-In-Heat Air Fresheners" for that style of hunting:lol: . Just crank the heat and open the windows!8)

screw the formalities! maybe you should walk up and introduce your self to him explain your intentions and offer him a last smoke and a blind fold. dump him, carve the flesh from his bones and turn him into poop! wasn't that easy

I'm with ya BB. Brand new monitor and brightness is fine.......but all I can see is the dark outline of his body in the last couple of seconds.

Not sure why some of you cannot view it... I can see him. It is a darker video as it was dusk, and filmed through the window of my truck.

Someone mentioned he would go 130" on a good day. Don't think so...

I have a whitey buck that nets 137" and this one on video was quite a bit bigger. Not big enough though.

I've got some good whitey bucks already but now I want that "once-in-a-lifetime" buck. If I go home without one then so be it. Back again next year!

Happy Hunting!

Too funny, maybe you should put some flowers in yer avtar too firebird! Actually those are Indian Paintbrush, a common flower in the Okanagan, and one of my favorite things to see when i get into the bush. Maybe I'll change my Avatar so I can look studly and be accepted by Mark. And by the way, I made my comment because maybe we should think a little bit more about our image among the non-hunting public out there reading these things. Does it do much for our image to say we "dump" an animal like a piece of meat? No, actually it lives up to the image people see when they drive out and see beer cans on the sides of the roads and street signs shot to shit. Just an opinion:|

well we are ahunting site and the non hunters dont like it they dont need to be in a HUNTING site....and well we do dump it like a peice of meat cuz well thats what it is...
