Looking to purchase a new knife for hunting. Sure there benefits to fixed blade over folders? Any must go to knives I should look at? Looking for myself, my nephew, & for my wife.

Any input would be great thanks.

Happy hunting

I've got quite a few hunting knives, and I like each one of them, but seems over the last number of years I grab my big Olfa knife when a animal hits the ground! Deadly sharp, never loses it's edge, and you can cut through Moose hair like a dream, snap off the end and start to skin with a razor edge! I still carry a knife on my belt and one or more in the Quad box, but seems they get used more around camp to open can's or peel spuds!!!

I only use a folder as a general utility knife in the field. For use as an actual hunting knife, I use one of these:

I prefer a fixed blade over a folder for both skinning and gutting an animal.

Main reason being that any blood/juices/fat or crap can be washed away and will not get into the workings/hinge of a folding knife.

There are a ton of choices out there. Good luck in your search.

I always have a Buck 110 in my pack. It has dressed a lot of game over the last 35 years...

For a folding knife, look at a Haida Tyee by Basic Tools, mine has been great! I also like the Schrade PH Hunter II with iron wood handle.

Gerber Big Rock. <$50 and so far it's been good to me.

I used a folding gerber gator for year and dressed over two dozen animals with it. I really have no complaints, but wanted to try a smal fixed blade. I bought a Fallkniven WM1 off Hermit a while back. I've only used it on a bear so far, but was very happy with it.

I have the Gerber Big Rock camp knife, the Gerber Metolious, a Gerber folder, a Gerber Mini Magnum, a Kershaw Junkyard dog, a butcher's skinning knife, a Winchester Bowie knife, and several other folders.

The one that I like to use for gutting? The Gerber Mini Magnum. For skinning? My butcher's skinning knife. General carry knife while hiking/fishing/hunting? My Gerber Big Rock Camp knife.

I never leave home without one of these. Can;t beat the weight and the scalpel like sharpness.

http://www.havalon.com/the-piranta-skinning-knives.html

They are the best knife for caping and skinning. Can't be used on the joints and bone but for everything else they are a must have. On a sheep hunt it is the knife to pack. When I was on my antelope hunt it was the only knife the guide uses. He said he does all his deer and antelope with it for all skinning, caping and butchering. Even finds he uses for most of his elk as well but does carry a fixed blade for the joints etc on the elk.

Lots of good knives around these days. I've had one of these for a few years now, works well for me.

I like the out door edge swing blaze. so far the best knife I have owned. other than that the buck omni hunter allways go fixed. dont need the thing closing on your knuckles.

Fixed blade for sure...I use the Buck Alaskan Guide knife with gut hook and part serrated and part smooth cutting edge.
Holds it's edge well, great steel, and the black rubber handle is easy to keep a good grip on!
