So I am ditching the open sight and ghost ring crowd and am looking for a scope for my guide gun 45-70
I really have no idea what I should be looking for as far as magnification, 150 yards would probably be the max shooting distance I would use this rifle for. I would prefer a shorter overall length and no objective bell ( just a straight tube from eye bell). My Price range is about $250 max. So what would you recommend? Also if you have a suitable scope forsale or trade send me a pm  Thanks.

I've got a Leupold VX-II on mine and it fits/looks/functions very well on the gun.

Check out LeBaron's annual catalogue on line for a screaming deal on
a bushnell 6500 elite 1.25 to 8. Compact with great eye relief
and raingaurd.

If you want a "straight tube" style, you're limited in your maginfication. That's not a bad thing with a bush gun as you are dealing with generally short distances (a reason why I much prefer open iron sights). A 1-4 power scope would be good for the bush and you can shoot with both eyes open. They also come at 1.25-4, 1.5-4 and fixed 2.5, etc. The problem will be finding one in your price range. Lepold's cheapest is their fixed 2.5 which goes for around $300. They go up to $1300 for the viariables. The Bushnell Elite 1.25-4 goes for around $500. You'll just have to shop around.

I have an old leupold 4x that i may throw on for now. What would you recommend for rings and bases?

I am having a hard time on what to put on my Marlin SBL and was thinking about the leupold scout scope, but to be honest I think they kind of look pretty ghey when mounted really forward. I have seen people on the net mounting the eye piece back just ahead of the rear sight and was wondering if anybody here has done that, and how it works.

I have Warne QD Rings and Bases with a 2.5 - 8 power mounted up on it - i had a 2-5 power scout scope but did NOT like it at all ! RJ

Are you hunting in all sorts of terrain? With a 150yrds max shooting range it'll help thinking about what type of terrain you spend most time in for choosing a magnification. Hunting really thick steep stuff I like 1.5-4x. In a bit more open stuff you may want to be able to go up to 8x.

While i don't need the extra power over 4 x i don't like that most 1.5-4 or similar have such small objective lens that they do not let in as much light as a 32-33 mm ob lens and in low light it makes a difference to my old eyes for sure ! Other then that prob 4x power is all that is needed ! JMO  RJ
