Well I did write up the whole story with all the pictures of the whole trip and then I hit post...it told me I could only have 5 pictures so I clicked 'back' to adjust and poof...the story was gone...but here we go again...

We left may long weekend for the 9 hour drive north to where my draw was with my wife, buckshotJIM, and his family. Took the first day to setup the campers and get settled in and decided to start the hunt the next day. The following morning we headed out and only 1.5 hours into the hunt I here buckshotJIM say 'I think I got one' as we glass the mountain sides. Sure as heck we see this small dot make his way along the mountain side. After watching him climb into an avalanche chute and tumble and climb out again we decided we were going to go for it. I grabbed pack and rifle and buckshotJIM grabbed rifle and binos. We left my wife and buckshotJIMs son to watch from the valley below. Our climb took us 4 hours up the ugliest terrain I have ever hiked. Over avalanche chutes with rivers below to mossy wet rock, as it started to rain. We passed two mountain goats at 150 yards that looked at us with a look of 'what the hell you guys doing up here?'. Finally after side hilling for a while we had a lock on the bear. During his journey he had crossed a large gorge/valley in the mountain side. There was no way we were going to be able to cross it. I ranged the bear at 470 yards. BuckshotJIM looked at me and said 'well you know how you rifle shoots' and I replied 'YUP'. We rested up and got positioned. Once I was ready to take the shot lying across my pack I ranged him again...488 yards...dialed in...BANG...direct shoulder hit...BANG...direct hit again...the bear made it to the avalanche chute next to him and started to slide down the mountain...he was done. We then started our decent from the mountain, which for any of you mountain hunters, its worse than going up. We repelled on willows down waterfalls and slide backwards on all 4 a couple times. It was quite the experience. We finally got down to the bear to find my wife with my 45/70 guarding the bear and buckshotJIMs son next to her. My first grizz...his coat is awesome with no rubs...then the work began...and my wife helped skin out the bear like a pro...she rocks!! By the time we got back to the trucks from carrying the hide across 3' of spring snow and constantly breaking through, I was done. What a great day. The next day we relaxed and did some prawning and went out the next day to look for blacks. We taught our dogs to tree bears so we had fun just having the dogs chase 7 different bears up trees. We came across one that was a shooter and well...the rest is history. Was an incredible trip with my wife, buckshotJIM and his family.

As for the 488 yard shot...I had load and shoot and the range LOTS...I can hit a 5" balloon all day long at 500 yards...so I was more than equipped with the setup I had to confidently take the shot...the end...

I will post some more pics of the trip...cheers

You have one tough wife to be waiting at the grizz not for sure knowing if it was dead or not.
