Took a drive up the Squamish and Elaho valleys today with the dogs.

Jack was digging the sunshine:

Then we saw this big bear, hanging out on the road. He galloped away, took another look at us, and wandered into the trees. (There was one other, as well, that exploded out of the bush beside the road, ran alongside the truck at 35 km/h for about 10 seconds, and then veered off into the bush again.)

I did say small creatures were included, too:

Speaking of, this is the first marten I've ever seen:

... And look what's in his mouth! Didn't realize until I got home and looked at the picture on my computer. Any guesses as to what animal that egg belongs to?

We also came across this little guy, and about four or five of his siblings (terrible photo; it's a grouse chick):

When I got too close, mom made a big fuss and drew me further down the road:

The dogs really wanted to get involved with the birds:

And, lastly, since this is HBC, it's always best to end a post with a question.

Here's some poop. Moose or elk?

Cool pics of the Marten! It does look like a shell in his mouth, maybe some type of freshwater clam?

Whoa! That's a lot of moose. I'll have to look more carefully next time.

I've seen a few nice bears up there while fishing in the fall. but theres just to many party animals up there. and hippes. Every time I have gone up there to shot guns in a safe location we have been reported. however the co's seem to be very understanding and all they are looking for is the drunk guys, or the people shooting guns in the wrong direction.
the last time I was up there the co came by to talk to us about our shooting and after he left the drunks beside us lit up a bunch of mattresses but the co came baclk 30 minutes later and bused them for a whole pile of offenses. good to see those guys are on the ball.

That's frustrating. I haven't had any issues when I hunt the area in the fall; in my experience, seems by the time the hunters move in, most of the partiers are on their way out -- but maybe that's because I'm only doing day trips and not camping. My resolution for this fall is to try and get as far away from the main roads as possible to avoid the people you mentioned.

Sadly, I came across a few giant piles of shells on some of my favourite spur roads Tuesday, including one gigantic pile that had .22 shells, 12 gauge shells, rifle ammunition and boxes and boxes of discarded handgun shells. Did my best to clean it up, but there's really only so much one person can do. :/

Duck/goose egg.An eagle wouldn't let him get away with it. Martins are tough and fearless. Think giant weasel with awesome teeth and claws. Can outrun a squirrel in the trees. Saw a squirrel jump about 20 feet out of the trees and ran in to a burrow to escape. The martin was pissed and came up close and hissed at me. Made me laugh.
