I am sure they are there as this is the time of year but remember there is a slot restriction in place. Even if guys are catching them nobody is going to say anything as you can only keep hatchery springs, pretty lame, even the Juan de Fuca derby was cancelled!

With that said I had a buddy out a few days ago, caught 7 springs all wild and released but all small 14-18 pounds, still a good day fishing!

Fishing derby yesterday turned up nothing. A few halibut, though. Buggest was 56 lbs.

Was out on the 15th & 16th. Lost a 10lber on Sat and caught a 7lber 20 mins later. Caught a 12lber on the 16th and my bro got a 14lber 15 mins later. Saw lots of fish getting caught/cleaned in the 12 - 15lb range with the top end at 28 - 32lbs over the two days. fishing out of Beecher Bay. The bite was relatively consistent from 5am to 11am and most people seemed to be hitting fish around the bay right after Beachy Head and then all along the outer tide line around that area. Good luck...will post a pic when my bro gets it to me.

Not too long ago 30 pounders were coming in daily to the Sooke area marinas from late May right through June. That was punctuated regularly by 40 lb fish and then a couple of big ones. ;).

There was a time when these huge, shore hugging Springs were commercially harvested with traps from shore.

20 years ago few worried about the fishery, because fishing was good.

20 years ago the Troll fleet was around 2000 + boats with free roam of the coast and virtually no quota, compairitivly speeking.
Not the same now in both respects. But this isnt a thread about survival.

Dad fishes Winters hard From Cheena, but he has been out in Merritt fishin 'Bows for a week and a bit. This time of year trout seem to take the priority.
Though a couple times a season we get out slabbin' Id be interested to know this too!

PS: I was on one of them trollers for 10 years,, so dont take me bad!

Just got back from Ucleulet on the weekend. We all got our salmon. Range was 10-15lbs. One around 20. Lots of halibut, biggest was about 25lbs. Great trip, better than working. Would love to go back when the big ones are there :)

Sooke is hit and miss right now. Lost a 35lb+ to a seal. Fought the fish for 20 minutes and then the seal for close to an hour... Sucks! We are averaging 2-3 springs the last two weekends we were out. Weather is hit and miss as well - Saturday afternoon, it was definitely lumpy out there!

Terry [T&T Charters] and I went out on tuesday morning-left the dock at 9am and were back an hour later limited out. We've fished together for about 15 years-good guy.Nothing really big, between 8 and 20 but they sure gave us some fun-really wild .A double header made life interesting.

I heard as well that it was quick fishing out there. A buddies buddy ( Yeah great info and yet to go through fishermen! :) ) said they did real well on the same fish. Done by 7 just looking for a slot fish!
By the way Travis im not callin ya out! but you gotta admit "A buddies Buddy" dont really sound relyable! Especially when they both are fishermen!

Ha ha. Ya well the story of the size wasn't very reliable. They called the biggest one they caught a 22 pounder when it was an honest 15 pounds. And were off significantly with thier weights on the others as well. I saw pics today and pointed that out with a good chuckle. They did however get their limit for the 4 that were on board. I'll be launching in Pedder bay tommorow morning and heading towards Sooke from there. Hopefully I'll have a story and pics to add to this thread.

Friend of mine told me that 7 over 40lbs were weighed in at P Renfrew early last week (Ya, I know, heard from a friend, who heard from a friend....:-P) , so I would think Sooke should be picking up pretty soon.
