View Full Version : Great long distance shooting backstop

Friends and I found an old hot tub lid, folded in half to double thickness, makes a great backstop to extra long range shooting where you might miss the bag. Not too heavy for its size and is portable. My arrows fly around 280 fps and they only penetrate about 6-8 inches at close range, 35 yards or so, and less the further i shoot.

Found this easier to set up (just lean against a tree with bag in front) than trying to hang millfelt.

Take care

Been using the hot tub lids for 20 years. Real fun hanging balloons on and letting the kids fling away.

Long range for a compound bow is anything beyond 60 yards - target.

Long range for a compound bow is anything beyond 40 yards - hunting.

I've got the ability to sight in out to about 100 yards with my target bow........that's interesting.

90 meters with a recurve is interesting ..... anything beyond that is fun as hell

One of my hunting bows has an 8 pin sight with the bottom as a floater. It is sighted in at 30-90yd with the fixed pins and the floater goes from 100 to 130. I have only had it out to 105 yards so far but have been able to put 5 arrows into 3 1/2" at 80 yards, with hunting setup. (No I don't shoot critters at that distance)Cheers

Incredibly long shots have been taken with (and video-ed) with bow and arrow. It's fun to watch them - but to try and duplicate them is another thing entirely. At the Burnaby flat field range it's possible to shoot from 100 - 115 yards. Lots of fun but only safe when there are very few shooters there with you. \It takes a lot of practice.

I hope I am not taking this too far off-topic...

I have found that to simulate more real world hunting situations (not focussed on hair splitting target accuracy), I add mental stressors to my shooting practice.
I shoot moderately long distances all the time (70 yards and no closer than 50 yards unless I am tuning my bow) which forces me to focus on all aspects of my form. One of my targets is a Rinehart 18-1 hanging from a tree limb and resting against the big spruce (don't shoot the tree!) at 70 yards, I figure that adds some stress to my shooting and if I can relax to make those shots with good groups regularly then a 30 yard shot at an animal will become that much easier. The other target is shot from 50 -105 yards and I try to focus on grouping as opposed to just lobbing arrows at it - aim small, miss small.

Cheers

Yup. I agree Ike. Now those 25 - 35 yard shots are a "slam-dunk".
