I was going camping/fishing/exploring/bear hunting and asked a guy I sometimes work for if he wanted to come. He was a gun nut but had never hunted, he'd done the core, had his paperwork but had to get his hunter number. He got all his paperwork and some new ammo and we were off, we met my brother in law and headed into a spot we'd never been before. We saw 5 bears before we got to camp, most were like ben johnson into the bushes although one decent one gave me a chance it just seemed to early as we hadn't even set up camp yet.

We set up and toured the lake in my bro in laws boat, road hunted a bit as it started to rain and then back to camp for dinner and some drinks.

The next morning we had a greasy breakfast as the sun came out and then headed out to patrol the roads. Three songs into my steve earle album we see a bear around the corner, I stop the truck, we get out and he comes out of the ditch and stands there with a what do you want look giving my friend enough time to hit him in the chest, the bear spun with one the front leg swinging in the wind and into the bushes. He went 25 feet. Sorry about the blurs, i didn't ask to if I could post their faces on the interweb so I figured I'd better blur them.

He was pumped! This boar had a beauty hide and nice size, not bad for having a hunting license for a week! He blew the front shoulder up, then the heart, then the liver! We opened him up after doing the gutless method, just to give him a little anatomy lesson.

He was shooting a 7mm with 150 grain winchester bonded bullets of some sort.

We saw a bunch more bears including two that compared to this guy but they seemed to be wise to me. We saw one chocolate that actually tree'd!

I think it was a she and she was pretty! Probably around 5 feet, gorgeous bear! I thought about it for a while but thought I'd hold out for a big boar. We backed off and she climbed down and began to feed again.

All in all an awesome time and I must admit I suffered from a fun hang over as reality set in and I was in line at the port man waiting to go to work.

So you:
A) Brought a new hunter out
B) Got him a really nice bear
C) Took a big fawn eatin' Boar out of your Barrio
D) Showed him how to do the gutless method and basic bear anatomy and
E) Showed him good ethics by passing up on a pretty 5' Chocolate.

What's not to like? Nice shot by him on his first animal as well. Kudos to your buddy.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I don't think passing on the bear had anything to do with ethics, because that would mean you could call someone unethical for shooting it when it was a legal animal. We didn't put the tape on buddy's bear, but I laid beside it and we guessed it somewhere between 5 and a half to 6 feet, he's going to get it tanned so we'll see.

We enjoyed some tenderloin on the barby and educated him on the toughness of bear meat. We have plans on making sausage out of the rest when we both get some time.

Very nice job. Great bear.

Great knife, too. That looks like Grohmann's full-size survival model. I bought 100 of those though my unit a while back and Grohmann gave me a 55% discount. We had them etch the unit crest on the blade. We sold most of them to the troops at $15 over cost and put the proceeds into the troop fund. I bought four myself. Kept one (the handle is still stained nice and dark from the grease of my last bear), sent one down to Kentucky to a 5th Special Forces Group buddy, gave one to my eldest son, and have one for a PPCLI sergeant-major friend in Edmonton who I still need to meet up with to present it to him. An awesome knife and highly recommended.
