So a quick story to please you all and then I have a few questions I would love some feedback. My bro and I quaded into a an area near cowichan lake last night and as we were setting up camp we spotted a bear across the valley. We watched it for an hour and a half as we relaxed and had some grub i made really sure it was alone and had a big melon with nice small ears...then it got dark and we rested up for the morning hunt i was sure the bear was not going far and for my first bear i didt want to get him in the evening... Up at five and sitting in camp my bro and i took turns glassing and laying by our small fire trying to warm up. And by six oclock the bear showed up exacly where he was last night... Go time...we broke camp drove down the valley then part way up the other side. Then we Snuck up the road to where we had seen him feeding along the roadside. As we Turned a sharp corner there he was... Feeding 15 yards away. Dang i should of had my bow. He didnt see us so for fun i snuck up a bit more waited then he walked right into his demise.... Done deal through the heart.. Lots of fun... After skinning it like a sock Which I guess is a little untraditional i cut the straps and quarters off at the kill site. The tube of hide is 71 inch nose to tail which I thought was pretty good but I bet it will shrink as it drys, i dont really care. Oh also it has a small white chest patch...I left the head and paws unskinned, but I think my skinning job was quite clean I didn't nick the hide at all, and i got most of the big flesh and fat off. There is very light rub mark on his arse but overall it is a nice hide. Anyhow Lots of fun and I may be addicted now!! It was actually my first time bear hunting too so a a real textbook setup was appreciated. No surprises.

Within 3 hrs I had the meat in my family meat cooler, and the hide lightly cleaned off and folded into a game bag then into an unsealed garbage bag and straight into the deep freeze.

Question 1 Did I miss any steps?
question 2. With a budget of 500 bucks give or take can I get anything done to the hide my father in law would love it for his b day.
question.3. If 500 bucks won't even come close to cleaning it up. How much would it be worth potentially as is? Did I mention I am on south Vancouver island.
question 4. If it is worth something is there any contacts in the cowichan valley whom to call?

Thanks guys

Sorry no pictures still trying to figure out this I pad. Refer to any other pictures of guys wearing a cowichan tuxedo and holding a dead bear if you must visualize for now, I am sure there are a few here.

Sounds to me like you have things well in hand. But before you lay our any money for a tanning, garb small hand fulls of fur in the rubbed area, it the hair pulls off in your hand it may not be worth the money. That said, you should be able to get him tanned and tanned only with your budget, I recently had one same size done no feet no head for $300.

It maybe too late now but I hope the head is outside the rest of the hide? Some folks put the head inside the folded hide. It's takes the longest to freeze and the longest the thaw, it can cause the hair on the head to slip later on in the process.

Nice bear by the sounds of it ,my opinion why don't you give the hide the way it is to your father in law for his birthday and let him deal with there processing ,if your father in law is not a hunter then he got a bear hide and can follow through with getting step two done..
