Well great long weekend! with a really nice color phase BB. I would like some help figuring the age of this guy, so if anyone has any guess fire away!
Not much of a story, hunting with my uncle and cousin, my cousin was the shooter, walked down a logging road, cmae into a real nice green area, and just over the knoll was the bear. cuz lined up his shot, and hit him in the rear. so off he went, and off we went. 3 shots later 2 missed he was finally down. measurement 5'9" i figure him to be 18-20 yrs old.

The reason i say he's 18 to 20 is because that is what my uncle figures. i said to him that i figure its 15 yrs old. But i really have no idea. teeth were very well worn, fangs were all broken off. and his nose had a slit through the one nostril, probably from fighting. O'm sure this guy has some storys to tell.

when a bear is out of his prime, is it possible that they start to shrink, like old people do?

If you really want to know his age, you can pull the small tooth right behind the top canine tooth and send it away and have it aged.

The oldest one I had aged was 24 yrs. old

Good looking bear. I would be curious to know what it's age was. Certainly teeth are worn out.

I wonder if it was possibly a city bear, or a dump bear? You got to imagine bears bite into some pretty stupid stuff and break their teeth when trying to get at food. It would also explain the cut on the nose.

I have looked into probably close to 60 bear skull mouths in the last few years and the one thing that seems to be consistent is the front teeth do get worn down, as the size of the skull goes up. Also, more broken canines, and middle molars. That being said, the broken canines do smooth/round off over time on the really old ones.

Was your measurement on the dead bear? Or was it on the squared hide? Who knows, the skull could go book. Usually the older bears have the biggest skulls. Take the skull into Ray Weins and have it done professionally, with beetles.

I would highly doubt he was a dump bear, or a city bear. we were about 70 km or more from any town on fsr's. but maybe he traveled!

we measured it after it was skinned out and laying flat. is this the proper way? I'm not really sure if thats the right way. I just do what my uncle says we should do. but yes your right about the beetles. rough skull measurement was about 18"
