I am still in a hunt for my first Black Bear but I am having hard time deciding if I will try to turn the hide int a rug when it finally happens. With all the different colors and shades I would like to see what I can expect from the finished rug. Please post some pics of your trophies. Cheers.

Often the pictures on line don't do the rugs justice, that said here's mine.

I will have to get some pics of my black bear rug for you but my grizzly shows what a light brown bear might look like.

Nice looking bear Steeleco. Blocky and looks like a fairly full coat. Even makes that orange wall look OK.

My Sept 5 brown is a little sparse in places. I'll have to see if I can get some good pics.

My black bear I just had tanned as I didn't want to spend the extra money on a mediocre bear.

Awesome pics so far you guys, keep them coming. In most of them I see the red border, that probably is most visible in last post by shaker, and I have to ask- what is the idea behind it??

On average, what does it run to have a rug made and how long until you get it back?

Lots and about 1-2 years. Average bear 6' 150- 200 bucks a foot per say plus tanning fees and fleshing your are looking at around 1200 or more. Best thing to do is phone around, some guys are cheaper than others.

No F'n way I'd drop 2k each in airfair to not shoot somthing if we had the chance. It's like going to a strip club.....costs lots of money, get to look at things but not a damn thing you can do about it.???? seems pretty silly to me!

Breaks up a large black mass with the striking contrast of the red. Customers love it..... I hate doing rugs but do agree with the bright colors.

Would the one on top be considered a "cinnamon" color? BTW both look awesome but i have to ask, would you consider adding to the collection if you came across another great looking specimen??

Hey shaker. I had a refusal to do a rug from a taxi here in Kamloops. "We don't do bears". Why is that? Just too much work for the money?

Yes it's a cinnamon phase black bear. I'm still hunting bears but at this point I'm very picky, I want a blond bear now or he better be bigger than my black one preferably chocolate phase. I saw a great looking one couple weeks ago but decided to pass so he can reach maturity.

What would your estimate be on the weight of this monster? Also, might as well do it here, what is the proper way to measure your bear? Thanks.

The bear tipped the scale at the taxi's shop at just over 350lbs gutted.

Skull was only 19.25" when i got it back. Now the skull is 18.75".

This would be a great pic to ask once more: How do you properly measure the bear. Nose to tail on the hide?? Nose to the end of hind paws?

My question from last post is still valid. Anyone??

For skull measurement you'll find a pdf file on the Boone an Crockett website under scoring your trophy.

The proper way to measure the hide without cheating is by squaring it. You'll have to pull just snug from nose to tail and front legs claw to claw until you obtain a constant and similar value. For example my black bear measured after skinning 7'4" nose to tail and 7'8" claw to claw, so it's a 7'6" black bear hide. What some guys or guides/outfitters like to do is pulling hard when only measuring nose to tail and of course that way the measuring will be somewhat bigger and false.

Thanks for these pointers. I will take this measurement issue one step further, in case you don't want the hide, or all of it anyways, how do you measure the bear with hide on??

Start the tape at his nose and measure to his tail. Then do the same from claw to claw. Badaboom. It will measure smaller on the carcass than off usually.

Thanks TSW, I will go with this advice.
