Went for a quick hike to look for some sheds and ended up taking a nice brown blackie. I was out of the truck and walking for about 5 minutes when I spotted the bear coming towards me. I was on an overgrown path and the bear was in a small clearing ahead but walking straight for me. He had no idea I was there and was just eating his way through the bush. I watched him looking for cubs but he never turned around and I didn't see any so I figured he was alone. If I was going to take a bear this spring may as well do it 100m from the truck. He went down in a gulley and when he came up the other side I shot him. He rolled down the hill and got up and ran back up the hill. Put another one in him and he dropped. Put another in his armpit and that was it. Better safe than sorry with a bear I figure.
Hes not huge but I was looking for a smaller bear for eating so I am very happy. Had him skinned right out except the front paws but was having a real hard time with them and it was pissing on me so I was rushing a bit and ended up stabbing myself in the hand. So I have my bear and a few stitches as well. A big reminder to take it slow and never rush with a knife.
The old Winchester 32 special is still a fine caliber for woods hunting and this rifle will be 100 next year. Now that the 308 is obsolete you Savage guys should trade in those creaky model 99 levers for the smooth action of the model 94. Found a big 2 point as well so a fun day.

This rifle doesn't look at all like it is almost 100 years old. Good story. Nice bear and the shed. Congrats.

I think that bear is a damm fine color regardless of size. That is a very good trophy.

I took my 94 in 38-55 out and shot a bear when it turned 100 way back in 2002, I should take it out for it's 110th birthday this year as well, sounds like fun.

Thanks Derek, he is a little rough and patchy to buck up for a full rug, lots of ticks on him so he must have been scratching and rubbing a lot. Ill wait till late fall for a big furry one in better shape to do a rug. Looking into a soft tan but not sure whats involved yet. Lets get out for a hike soon!

Nice bear, but what a great rifle!!!! Nice to see it getting used! There is a model 94 (made in 1898) for sale down the road a few miles but it is definately in rougher shape than yours!
