nice looking bear, blackie, i mean brownie ;).... bears don't breed till 3-4yrs old, a sow with cubs would have a defining hump by then. The second pic is great for showing a sow's face, eyes are close together, slender muzzle, ears look big for its head. 3rd pic is good for showing a sows "curvy" body rather then a "boxy" bear

Really nice pictures and a beautifully coloured bear, looks like a good sized bear to me but I'm no bear hunter. I have to agree with everyone else and say it is a black bear.

black bear .. is what I see and don't see .. like a pronounced humped shoulder and large head and snout ..
Nice coat on that bear, thick, full and shiny. Different shades of browny/black.

The whole thing about the bear started when I visited Huble Homestead. One of the tour guides asked if we saw the grizzly with her cubs in Johnson's field on the way in. I said I saw a brown phase black bear, but no cubs. She said, no the one with the two cubs in guaranteed a grizzly and that it was there last year too - and that since I have a good camera I could get some nice pictures of a grizzly right from the highway.

Then I saw the silver cub and started to second guess myself. Here are the cubs:

Anyways, one day I will be perfect. Until then I will ask the odd dumb question.
