Very informative and the timing was uncanny, I had just finished filling out my LEH card for mountain goat in 4-06. I've never tried for goat before but I've been doing lots of reading and studying the zone via google and now all I need is to win the lottery and off I go.

If you want it to be realistic, just go for a 5km run, then set up your laptop outside in a snowstorm. As you sit there huffing and puffing, sweaty and shivering in the wind, with frozen hands trying to wipe the snow from your screen you *might* get a sense of what it's really like to i.d. goats on a hunt...

That is a tank ! Nothing to do with horn size, that is a mature trophy there.

Have watched seen lots of goats over the years, some up close, but was my first time hunting for one last year.

Studied the Alaska wildlife quiz, passed on nannies all year and one good billy eluded me, and finally pulled the trigger in February on a solo, large, shaggy, piss-yellow, realtively thick horns close together, curved .......9 year old nanny. WTF? I have come to the conclusion it is easier to id goats in a mixed group, and that horn closeness and curvature doesn't count for much. Seems like it is how they carry the mass that counts. An as somebody posted above if you see a good billy, you'll know.

Looked at the quizzes again and I think the Colorado quiz gives a better sense of realistic goat id situations where it is difficult to tell sometimes, rather than the more obvious Alaska quiz: http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Education/pdf/HunterEducation/MountainGoatIDQuizWEBRev09102010.pdf

Yup, trophies are Horns Coat and the hunt its self

I agree they do, even more so when there's a nanny with a kid to compare to. Average billies don't though. Kitnayakwa's story is a perfect example of just how hard it can be. I wasn't trying to discredit the quiz, just point out that identifying a goat with a still picture in the comforts of your living room is nothing like doing it on a hunt.

Like others have said really big billies stand out especially in the rut when they are all dirty from wallowing. I have seen some awfully heavy horned nannies however so it isn't always easy, I agree with Krico it can be tough to tell sometimes :)

A great thread for someone like myself to go over & take info from. The hunt itself is what appeals to me when I see the photos, read the stories or watch video's of these beasts & the terrain you find them in. It's nice to do some reading up on the animals themselves though for a novice like me, thanks for the links.
