While I was rummaging through my trunk today I found some shot shells bouncing around underneath the golf clubs and work gear. There was some Xpert HV's and a few shells from a cheapy 100 pack, both Winchester. So because I was bored I cut one of each open. The Xperts were 3" #3's and looked like a bunch of kidney beans mixed with welding slag. Inconsistant sizes, out of round, flat sides, junk. Obviously I wasn't surprised there and I doubt anyone on here would be. So I hacked open the cheapy winchester universal shell. it was 2 3/4" #4. I was very surprised to find that all the shot was round and consistently sized. All in all the quality of the shot in the cheap shell was noticeably better than that in the Xpert. Is there any explanation for this? I don't plan on using either this year anyways but it seems odd they would put lesser quality shot in a hunting load vs the gravel pit special. I guess it was only one shell of each and maybe i'd find different results if I cut open 100 of each but that just seems like a lot of work

Yall keep badmouthing my go to shells and I'll have to throw up picture after picture of 4-5 man limits taken exclusively over Winchester Xperts 3" #3s. Greenhead after greenhead. hahahaha. This seems to be a never ending story on here

I love em, I'll even buy them off you for 50 cents on the dollar if you dont like em that much.

Just how much we love them?

haha I look forward to the pics! I've been using the same shell but I haven't patterned the new gun yet and it might lead to a change. I was just kind of perplexed as to why the quality of the shot was so much worse in the more expensive shell by the same manufacturer.

I used the cheap HV's last season which was my first season hunting ducks. I never noticed very much of a difference from the "bismuth" winchester supreme or the federal black cloud in 2 3/4" other than the cost. I did notice more feathers cut up with the black cloud though. I never patterned that gun but I think I'll pattern my new gun with the HV's before this season starts.

The list is quite small that do, so dont feel left out. Not that hard really but I think most who have been invited wouldnt risk blabbing about it and never be allowed back haha.

I dunno??? With all the bad mouthing about the X-perts why does everybody keep using them??
You want to see funny pellets you would be amazed at the re-claimed shot we used to handload for ducks when I was a kid!!
A lot of SAWBILLS met their maker trying to run the gauntlet by us bad asses hiding in log-jams on the Cowichan!!!
Some pellets were flat as a pancake ,some like little spears, certainly very few round ones!! Lots of death dished out with those
old re-loads! Cheap too! Say, Adam , quite a bit of " brown" in that 1 Morrison Lk. shoot??? Must have been your "guests" who
were responsible for that,eh???? -----Cheers----Field Marshal.

Guests or my brother. Hahaha. Once November hits and the migration is starting meat on the table is meat on the table. I'd rather hunt an extra hr and pick all drakes then shoot whatever the first 8 ducks I see. But I will do that if geese are coming later

I would never shoot those cheap ass shells out of my 410 when i am skybusting over a river with no way to retrieve my ducks

I would say he could have his own show with just him and it'd be great. Though he does tone it down when a camera or video camera comes out. He's like a stand up comedian who only does live shows.

I guess you guys just have the barrells to shoot those shells... :s

With my 870 SuperMag it puts only about 50% of the Xpert 3" 2's in a 30" circle at 30 yards on a modified choke.

Same gun, I put 75% of the Federal Speed Shok 3" 2's in a 30" circle at 30 yards on a modified choke. Huge improvement.

Same gun, I put 95% of the Federal Speed Shok 3" 2's in a 30" circle at 30 yards on a WadWizzard choke. Simply amazing!

-------

Both the federal and Xpert loads are 12 gauge 3" 1-1/8 oz 2's doing 1550 fps. Federal pellets are way better quality IMO, and we get the federals for CHEAPER than Xperts.... so it only makes sense for us to use Federal. :)

After over 50 yrs of shot gun shooting I've learned that all guns(even the exact same models) do not always patern the same with identical shells. We (my 2 partners and myself) shoot a veriety of guns Mod.12, SBE, X2, P350, Red Label, Baikal, Nova and 1100 and with the exception of the M12(which is 2.75" and patterns good withWin. shels in that size.) we get very good paterning with "cheap reds" 3" BBs, #2,3&4s) I have never counted pellet holes to work out a % but there arnt very many holes out side the patern. I would say as a whole with what the others have said that they seem to be pretty consistant in MOST(not all) shotguns. When you find something that works don't mess with it for sure.
