View Full Version : Which ATV tires?

So I am going to need some new ATV tires before too long and was wondering which ones some of you guys are running or have run that you would recommend. They will be used mostly for gravel trail type riding with some muddy sections and some snow at times. Mostly an all terrain type tire. What's out there that works well and doesn't puncture easily?

For that style of riding it would be tough to go wrong with Pitbull Growlers, Interco Reptiles, or one of the other radial tires available.

Definitely check out the Maxxis bighorn radials! Best set of atv tires ive used yet. Quiet, smooth ride, durable, good in mud and snow, and the tread life has lasted far longer than any of the ITP tires ive used. Worth a look, many of my buddies have switched to them now.

I have had one puncture but other than that they have been great

Two really nice tires for road use are ITP TerraCross and Maxxis Bighorns. If you want a cheaper Bighorn then there's GBC Dirt Tamers which are a bias ply tire. They all give a smooth ride on gravel roads and decent traction on mud & snow. I have Dirt Tamers and am happy with them. My friend put TerraCrosses on both his ATVs.

Go to the store you bought your bike from and inquire about some takeoffs. These arethe stock tires that are taken off when they are upsold to bigger more aggressive tires. They are usually priced reasonably and in my experience the stock tires that come on a bike are the best choice for the type of riding you described. I have over 20,000 kms on three different Honda Atvs and have tried numerous aftermarket brands and this is what I do.

Swamplites, best iv had and had a few to say the least.

Punctures as a side note in my experience are a direct result of overinflation. Less air less puncture.

ITP Mudlite Radials, pretty smooth riding and great for gripping any terrain except deep snow...they dig in...

I'd buy the Kenda "Bear Claws" again, for an all around tire that wears good and don't kill your arms on a long ride.

I personally like the swamplites or mudlites. Radials are supposed to produce a straighter ride at higher speeds (just like in a vehicle), but unless you're going over 80km/hr, I don't think you need radial tires. I consistently ride 70-75km/hr in areas with no wobble to make me concerned. While many seem to like them, I believe they are a waste of money.

Maxxis Big Horn. When my stock tires go I'm replacing with these. Check out what guys suggest on the Quads.ca form. For what you are describing the Big Horns are a favorite.

Agreed. I live in Fort St John where there is more mud than rock and I love these ATV tires.

whatever you do, DONT buy a set of stock takeoffs.( unless you lost your job and you're on a real tight budget). stockers have no sidewall strength and are very prone to sidewall puncture. if you plan on riding far from the truck(as im sure you do) a flat tire on your quad when you are 10 klicks from your truck can ruin a good day. all of the ones suggested above are good tires. I run 27" mud lites on mine and love them.

With one exception, http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/4/30/397/4704/ITEM/Goodyear-Tracker-P-Front-Rear-Tire.aspx The GY Tracker P's that came on my 01 Sportsman were an awsome tire. 8500K before I got my first flat, and I still had about 1/4" of tread left on the fronts, backs ran for another 1000K before they got pulled, and never did have a flat. I woulda gladly bought more, if they were still around, but the Bear Claws were as close as I could get, and they've treated me great so far.

Most stock tires are only good for the showroom floor. They're 2-ply (instead of 6 or 8 ) and a 1/2" tread (instead of 1"). A lot of ATVs come with an upgraded wheel and tire package which is a little better.

I had Swamp Witchs and replaced them with Dirt Tamers. I don't know why anybody thinks tractor tires (all the "mud" tires) are good on roads. If you take your hands off the bars you can see (and feel) how the tires rock from side to side from one lug to the other. It's not a smooth ride.

As an aside I also think all these tires are mounted backwards. On tractors (and commercial equipment) the lugs pull dirt under the tires while ATVs push dirt to the sides.

I have owned pitbull rockers, itp mudlite radials, super swamper reptile and swamplites. I ride mainly gravel and dirt trails some pavement and lots of snow and nothing compares to the pitbull rockers. They hook up awsome in wet rocks and track very well in snow and the best part is they ride like your stock tires! ATV outfitters has the cheapest I've found on the Internet. Oh and they are 8 ply and nearly impossible to puncture.

If I didn't ride predominantly mud in FSJ I'd be running Pitbulls. Phenominal tire.

You've got a front and rear view pictured, to my eyes they are same/same, if indexed the same. You're right, I should have noticed the safety triangle. Maybe it's a personal preference or maybe people don't notice. When I bought my used tractor the tires were mounted the same way so on one side they were /\ and the other side was \/.

KodiakHntr

Thats simply an error by whoever mounted it.....

I had a Big Bear that ended up with a SpiderTrac mounted backwards like that.

Heck, you never know with farmers, my dad bought a tractor that had the left side mounted one way and the right side the other.

Best of both worlds I guess, equal traction in forward and reverse........

^^^ Yeah what he said. I really haven't seen a bad review on Bear Claws on the quad forums. They work well for me, and I've never had a flat with them. And at $350 mounted and out the door, they won't break the bank.

I've had ITP Mudlites for years and never had a problem. Love them!
A buddy of mine bought a set two years ago and kept getting punctures until he got rid of them. I haven't had a flat in 4+ years.
I keep telling him to air down and eat less.

Only issue I've seen with Mudlites (normal version, not the radial) is that they are soft and wear reasonably quickly on hardpack. and yes, I've got a set on one of my bikes). Great ride though, great traction in a lot of applications as well. We use them on probably 12 or 15 units at work on a daily basis.

Really depends on what a guy is looking to do with a tire though, as atv tires can get as specific as you want, ride down to how consistent the mud is that a guy might ride in.

The maxxis zilla is an amazing tire. Look up reviews and its very hard to find someone who doesnt like them. They are smooth really good on hard pack and snow and mud. Lightweight to so you wont lose much power.

Maxxis Bighorns or MudBugs have been the best for me. I use my quad for work nearly every day and rack up about 5000 k's/year.
The worst tires (other than stock crap) that I have ever run have been the Mud Lites. They were terrible because they wore out very quickly. They are probably the most popular tire out there, but they are cheap for a reason.
My current tires are the Mud Bugs with a little over 7000 kms on them and still have atleast 50% tread remaining.
Also I have only had one flat in all those K's whick is pretty incredible seeing as I ride through recently harvested cutblocks on a regular basis.

talked with ITP and they recomended the baja cross as their longest lasting highest quality tire..8 ply sidwalls have tread wrapped over the sidwalls a bit..radials smooth agressive and after 3 years still look like new ..spring bear and fall moose/ deer...would buy another set however probably never will need to..

Lots of different opinions here.
Over 8000 Kms on my mudlites now... Don't need replacing and that's running island hard packed roads and paved logging roads with 175lbs of dogs and aluminum boxes on them.
Best tires on the market unless you're a bogger are the xtr's.

Actually I have about 2000kms on the tracks so maybe 6000 on the rubber.
