A few Peace Country Pics http://www.panoramio.com/user/6401594 I was reading an online article on energy developemnt in B.C. and one of the comments said something like The only energy developement in B.C. should take place from the Peace river north because the rest of the province was too pristine and needed to be protected for the people of B.C. and future generations. All I could think was this person has never seen the Peace Country the way I see it.I've had the priviledge of travelling to most areas in B.C. and I've never seen a place that wasn't pristine and unique in its own way.I've never been able to figure out the best way to call an area less pristine and ripe for industrial developement, growing up I thought beauty was in the eye of the beholder,I've heard an area is less pristine if it's not in your backyard or if in the big picture the votes from the area don't really matter,Iam not sure.Iam not against developement but I do think Dams are old technology and there are better ways to power up the province.I like to think in the next 20 or 30 years the brilliant minds of the world are going to come up with some new technology and it would be much easier to spin the valve closed on some temporary Co-gens vs pulling the plug on the Dam.When I watch the news and see the govt. news releases on why we need Site C ,we seem so hypocritical in B.C.
We need to flood the valley to power up the oil patch because it's bad to burn fossil fuels in B.C. ,yet we're going to help save the world by giving them our fossil fuels to burn.
I was living in the Kooteneys when Mt.St Helens erupted it seemed like all summer our garden was white with ash every morning. You can google it and it tells us the next morning after the eruption the ash was falling in Edmonton,AB,three days later it was falling in New York, and in 15 days the ash had circled the world back to Mt.St Helens.Seems like if it's bad here were all somewhat in it together .
I thought I'd post up some pics to show some of the area that's proposed to be flooded and impacted. One of these days I'll scan some critter pics and post them for now mostly scenery. For those not familiar with the Peace Country most of the land within an hour of any town is private and if it looks good for hunting it could be.If it's easy to get permisson hunters are usually stacked on top of each other jockeying for position.I've always considered it a priviledge to be given access thru private land to hunt, fish and take pictures and in the Peace you need a good map to sometimes figure out whose place you are on .Take the time to learn the property boundaries because when you screw up, Landowners aren't any different from any other group of people and chances are the neighbors will also know you screwed up.Hope you enjoy the pics. I'll add some pics soon to this post.

Great pic's Don. I for one am certainly hoping to not have to watch the valley flood.

The pic of the snake, what model of snake is that?

Not my idea originally but.....
If the demand for power is in the big metropolitan area of the Lower Mainland, why not build a Nuclear power plant there, and let them suffer the consequences of the demand. It might even promote some more intelligent conservation measures.
Why is it that the rural areas of BC suffer the consequences for the impacts of big populations centres re: demand for water, power etc. ?

Thanks, the pic was sent to a biologist familiar with B.C. snakes and I was told it is a common elegans(gartersnake)but not a typical colour variation. If you click on the pics there is captions on most. For those not familiar with Panoramio it's the site you put your pics on and google earth selects them based on their rules for submitting.Google earth requires an X on the map but Panoramio allows pics with no X's on the map a good alternative.Search anywhere in the world or choose a tag ie; mountains, Peace river, sunsets, waterfalls etc.It will bring up all the pics with that tag, click on the pic you like and the name of the photographer and it will bring all their photos and you will be amazed at the photos out there.Works great for hunting trips or travel holidays. Some photographers have lots of pics to go through but if you select their tag your interested in ie;nature ,wildlife it will show those pics tagged accordingly. In Panoramio the photographers retain all the rights if they choose so there is some High quality shots submitted (sometimes at lower resolution). Most of the pics when selected will enlarge and can be viewed in slide show format full screen.

Spot on. Then when a rural community needs jobs (new mine/fsr) some armchair quarterbacking douchebags in the city get to make the decision.

Thanks for taking the time to post and share. Awesome pictures BTW. As for the snake cool color variation usually we see the ones with the big yellow or green stripe down their backs when fishing up HH way.

Wow, that pic on the first page titled Bear Flats Hwy 29 is exactly where we scored 2 elk on an LEH. It was -42 and we got them on the high bluff on the left of the picture. Too bad all will be flooded with Site C.

I haven't been on foot along that section of the Peace, but in Del Rio (just south of the proposed site C) I was amazed to find a cold semi-desert microclimate along the Pine River. There was scrub brush, bunch grass and just the general look of spences bridge about it. Just in a small south-facing area beside a ranch.

If there's anything like that a few kilometers north under the site C high water line, consider it short lived.

what lens were uyou using for the wildlife? I've tried a few cameras over the years. Pentax K1000,Pentax P30t 70-210,Swarovski spotting scope + 800 mm adapter ,borrowed a German lens for part of a fall 400mm F4,point +shoot ,currently 2011 using Canon T2i with a 28-200mm...alot of the pics through spotting scope with adapter, works much better now with the digital camera.

Growing up I was always told if I wanted to catch a fish I needed my hook in the water.(watching fish jump in the Boats in S.E. U.S. Iam not so sure)Getting a good pic sometimes requires a little patience and alot of stars to line up to be in the right place at the right time . Most of the time sucking wind up the mountains to save weight I left the camera in camp. A few times I put my gun or rod down, grabbed my camera The Stars Lined Up and here is a few of my favorites

Wow!!! great pictures!!!

I find that the Peace River country is the most beautiful during the fall. Gotta love all those beautiful colors.
My husband and I traveled through there in '96 and '01.....I sure would love to do it again.

can you pm me about how i can use my pentax kx with a spotting scope and adaptor? where do you get the adaptor? thnx

Not sure of your spotting scope but you can google digiscoping and find options. My set -up swarovski 20-60 x by 80 mm (not HD).I have to take the eye-piece out and put the adapter (swarovski 800 mm photo adapter old style)in the spotting scope. The camera end has threads that fit a T mount adapter.T mount adapter has internal threads one side other whatever mount your camera has.T mount 20-40 online 16 dollars out of B&H in the U.S. Lots of new technology out there my set up is fairly old.New adapters now where you can leave your camera lens on the camera and slips over the eye-piece so you can use up to full 60x eye piece if the heat waves allow.(Would be great for moon shots or cooler weather shots) I find I am always looking for a place to stash the lens &eyepiece when I get set up.
For me there is no substitute for a sturdy tripod and a cable release, but I see some videos on line handheld due to newer camera's faster shutter speeds. I purchased my stuff from Backcountry in FSJ.Check local then check Photoprice.ca. It will give you current prices and deals in U.S & Canada.
Consider a programable release after market aprox. 40 dollars. You might want to try some Time-lapse photos. Check out you tube and see what you can do.You can search for used adapters but if I was going to do it I would check out the new system where you keep your eye-piece and lens on ,way less things to roll down the mountain and get stepped on.New style gives you 20x-60x zoom all I have is fixed 800mm. New style (DCA adapter) much cheaper but you need a fixed 50 mm lens for dslr cameras.Let me know how you make out.You-tube has some tutorials on digi-scoping.

OK, I am now a little more excited about moving to Tumbler Ridge, thanks for posting those photos. Going house hunting all next week, hope I find something agreeable. I took some pictures of the valley they want to flood for the site C project when I went through a few weeks past, it is beautiful, I hope it doesn't happen.
