Great picture with the kids. What is the boy holding for a firearm. What region are you in and did you call him in or spot and stalk. I have never hunted turkeys but have always seen lots in region 8-14 while whitetail hunting the last 30yrs.

Glad to see you out there with the Grand kids ( I presume that they are your grand kids).
Nothing like passing on the skills of hunting to the younger generation.
Good job.

Thats actually my uncle ( kids' great uncle in pic ). We were near Creston. The gun is a mossberg 510 mini 20 guage with a Undertaker Xfull turkey choke and sunforce red-dot....the gun was for show in the pic...I was trying it this year for my son to use next year when he is 10; I bought it early because they are very hard to find and I stumbled upon one. I actually missed on some opportunities because of its shorter effective range but now I know for him next year....it will still kill birds at 40m though..

It was a Jake....I made the mistake of using my work camera just because it was 14 MP....bad lighting doesn't show the color of the head...the give away in this photo is the morphology of the tail-feathers...Jakes do not have even tail-feathers like big Toms....or hens for that matter.

Hens don't have fans. ;)

Congratulations kgriz on a first time success. It's great to see more people get out to hunt North America's favourite game bird. The picture of you walking with the kids is my favourite. :)

Yeah they had a blast....actually I've been taking my son for 6 years ( except last year)....I used to push him around in a jogger stroller! We've killed lots of birds farther north but it was quite a different story in a more southern urban environment. Also, setting up and keeping my 5 year old daughter quiet and still long enough was also quite a challenge

Making it happen with the kids along is a challenge to say the least, especially once the birds get wary....running and gunning gets taken out of the playbook.

Every trip has one great photo....the second picture was it. I was walking behind them all and scrambled for my camera when I heard my daughter congatulating her Great Uncle on his turkey, grabbing his hand and also telling him that it was good that we "got at least one". I wish I would have used my better camera for the shot but the moment was definitely captured regardless.

Way to tough it out buddy! Wish I could have stayed longer like you, but just couldn't make it happen...

As kgriz stated it was tough hunting further north. We both put on hundreds of extra kms trying to locate birds. I was lucky enough to make a play on 3 separate gobblers opening morning, but just couldn't close the deal. Turkey hunting with small children certainly has it's challenges.
