Had that 7mm stainless stalker, sold it and bought a 300wsm in the same gun. I'm really happy with it. The Remingtons xcrs are nice too but the size of the bolt is too small and throw is too steep for my big hands and I smash my thumb knuckle against the scope when I cycle a round. Any rifle should do the trick if shot placement isnt the problem. Actually shot placement and the projectile would be my concern before the actual rifle. But new toys are good!

there is nothing a .30-06 can't kill with athority in BC. so I presume it;s the rifle that isn;t doing the job?

My thoughts exactly!!The 30-06 is a well proven caliber.

It has been killing game all over the world for 100yr. There are a lot of "hunters" that use the old "06" and I think you should talk to some of them.

I think you guys should settle down if the guy wants an opinion on which new rifle to buy just give him that. I had a 30-06 for a long time and then when I decided it wasn't the rifle for me I bought a ruger stainless synthetic .338 win mag, I shot a couple of moose and a bear with that, and then I decided that wasn't the rifle for me. So then I bought a remington bdl model 700 ss dm in .300 win mag, I have shot a couple of moose with that but it now doesn't seem to be doing the trick for me and I will probaly buy something new in the spring. I think that buying new guns is like a disease and I definately have it, some guys just like one and thats fine but some like lots and thats cool too.

Could you elaborate a little...... Not doing the job how? Acuracy problems? not comfortable to shoot? Animals being wounded? Theres lots of knowledge on here but ya gotta let them know what the problem is?:)

I use my 338mag for everything, its comfortable and will get the job done, it has major stopping power incase you come across the grizzly kind! It works for me, but one thing to keep in mind, the odd 6 is an awesome gun, its multi purpose and shells are readily available anywhere, when you get into other calibers it gets to be big $ and not so available.
Get the 650 nitro express!

get your self a quality scope (leupold) in talley rings (low) and a rem 700 SPS Stainless (about $600 from WSS in Calgary). nothing wriong with a 30-06 for hunting out to 300m for anything that walks in BC. (yes yes, that includes Gbear defence too)

+40 year old Parker Hale Norma Magnum .308, Bushnell 4x scope (newish because I fell on ice out hunting 2 years ago and bent the 40 year old Banner scope). With hand loading everything from 165 gr. up is possible. Still have my ten (10) 215 gr. grizzly stoppers from a flyin to Cold Fish Lake in 1972.

Although I love the 7mm mag, I hezitate about recomeneding it to young hunters. With the extra kick from the magnum calibers it not hard to develope a twich. If you want another gun I say go for it! but keep in mind a badly placed shot from a 300win mag is no beter then a badly place shot from a .223.

as for bands I love my savages and my marlins:)

I agree with k-1 and also recommend reading the "magnum egos" sticky, very nice read.
