View Full Version : Black Bear Scouting around PG

Was out this morning with NoahDawg doing some blackbear scouting west of PG. Still pretty snowy out there! Any logging roads that were plowed this winter are prettyy snotty, as the frost is just coming out of them. Seen one tiny pile of black poo, not sure if it was a blackie or a wolfie, and no fresh paw prints yet! Did play with the New to me Marlin 450, and the 270 win. Will keep the HBCers updated here! i generally don't bother until second week of may out west. Not uncommon too see 12+ bears in a day out there. mostly sows and cubs and little boars though. generally see more bruisers north east of town.

There is still quite a bit of snow out there. I have never hunted spring bear, but I will this year. An old timer told me the first week of May is generally when the action really picks up.

From smithers west is startin to green up along the highway and they seem to be a week or two ahead of us, i still have yet to see a bear on my runs out to rupert though. This rain today will help us a lot. Dad and i got grizz draws in 7-18 so i am guessing it will be a while for us yet. Hopin to stick an arrow in my grizz if i get a chance

Where can I find some info to have a read about the regs you guys have for spring black bear hunting?,don't seam to be able to find any in the Fish Wildlife web site.

Philcott
04-16-2012, 12:11 PM
Te,

each management unit is different so yuo need to check where you want to hunt. This link is for the area around Prince George.http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations/1012/docs/region7b.pdf and if you scroll down to page 80, look a little over half way down and you will see black bear with the MU's and dates.

There is also general info in the hunting regs.

Ive been out and about scouting etc this weekend south a ways and still lots of snow. But ive seen numerous bears already, so its just around the corner..

This one area that ive found that has the most sign i think theres a big arse bear around- the poop shoots big (coke can size, seen a bunch of it around):

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r141/ianwuzherephotos/096.jpg

Seen a momma today:

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r141/ianwuzherephotos/090.jpg

She was holding her ground as three cubs appeared:

They were pretty tiny.

Can see an ivory still in the skull:

Had fun searchin some new ground this weekend- spring has sprung.
Happy i found a new deer/elk honey hole, picked up some sheds as well:

Looks like I have to head up to PG for work on Tuesday thru to Thursday, but was hoping to stay thru the weekend. Just wondering what BB sign is looking like now? I am thinking up the hart a little ways. That is where i have family. Is it worth hanging in PG, or should I head a south a bit? I used to live there so I know how it can change in a hurry, but want a sense of what people are seeing now.

There's no new veg at all on the salmon yet. Very few bare spots even on the south slopes on the cutblocks.

04-19-2012, 04:33 PM
The pipline in 7-16 is clearing up nicely with lots of bare spots and little veg coming through. It's nice to finally see the lighter greens or spring. Still lots of water hanging around making the ground pretty soft. First mosquito sighting this past sunday. The BB's can't be that far away now!

Between Hwy 97 and the big power lines. Easy enough to access from the highway , but tough to travel along it because of the water spots. If it's the same one.

the one just before salmon river road??

Boner
04-26-2012, 03:33 PM
Yeah that one. But north of there. It's the same pipeline that crosses the Salmon Road between the A road and the C road, can't remember exactly which km. The P/L comes close to the 500 Kv lines near Summit Lake. East of the Hwy. I've walked kms of it, it's pretty overgrown in places, and visiblility is low in places because of the dips and corners.

I am heading south west tomorrow. Gonna see if a couple of my "Secret spots" are open yet!! I will make sure I don't tell anyone, or show pictures when I get back! Don't need anyone in there shooting all my Booner Black bears! If you really want to know where I am going though, just head out the Blackwater to the Pelican, and then follow the empty Budweiser cans! Moosin

Well just got back from PG. Played cat and mouse with a beautiful 5' chocolate by salmon valley. Not a rub on him.n On thursday saw him in a field I couldn't hunt. Tried to push him out, but he would just stomp and look. We cut in on a road behind him and he was still there. Went up a little ways and ran into alot of snow. Came back down and picked up his tracks crossing the road into the bushes but couldn find him. Looked a while. But he won that one. Went back on friday, almost a carbon copy of thursday. But this time got some shooting in. Realised I have a long way to go. He set up a clays at 100 to 500 yards. Off hand I was done at 200 at in four shots. Guy I was with 5 for 5. I miss living up there and having the opportunity to just shoot find a clear cut and shoot within 30 minutes. I cant even get to a range and set up in less than an hour here.

Good luck, he's a nice color. I might feel a little bad using a rifle on a bear his size, but using a bow puts the challenge back into it. Post a pic when you connect. Remember, there's lots of time for sleeping after the season closes.

Then had one burst out of a very green patch and into the timber. We went back for him, but a big ole dually scared him off during our stock on him. Seen a small little guy, momma must have just kicked him away, cause he was a little guy!! lost count on the number of hares we seen, like 20+!!!! 2 mulies and 2 moose!
