Although I own several different slings, I still haven't found one that I really like. Went to Grouse River today and checked out the Limbsaver:

Although it looks good, I'd like to hear other's opinions on what slings are the best on the market.

Leather military sling, you can twist it over your left forearm to make a pretty stable upright shooting platform.

Another vote for "Safari sling" free hands for glassing, the weight is distributed over both shoulders. I have the Limbsaver and used it for a few years till I found the Safari.

Browning X-cellerator ( a little slippery on some jackets though)
or
Good old 1" leather with the adjustable slide.

I've been intrigued by the Safari sling for a while, but never used one. Two questions.....Do the sling swivels beat up the stock at all? It looks like there is material between the stock and the swivel but it is hard to see. Is the sling backpack friendly or does it tend to hang up on pack suspension. Thanks.

My sling is a rubber 2 inch sling. It's like a scuba diving head harness type material. Sticks to my shoulder in all weather and when you wrap your forearm it pulls the gun in nicely w/ the elasticity of the sling. It is a browning but don't know the model, Ive never seen anyone else w/ one.

My vote goes for the Safari Sling as well, easy to use even with backpacks.
A while back I was trying to buy one but couldn't find, I'll have to look again if it's available now.

My favorite sling is a 1" leather that rough on the under side. I find it stays on the shoulder way better than a synthetic padded wide sling I also have. not sure what the name brands are

I've replaced all my old leather and nylon with the comfort stretch style slings, they are super comfy, stay put, and are well priced.

I would highly recomend the Butler Creek rubber molded over webbing.

The shoulder side has rubber Vs that grip your shoulder and jacket material.
It stays put better than anything else I have tried.

I have one of those in my collection, Marlin375. I think I paid about ten bucks for it at Canadian Tire (sale basket). Of the various slings I own, it's the simplest and the best.

That's exactly why I like them - I also dislike hunting with my rifle slung over my shoulder. With the safari sling the rifle is in a ready position, but I can still hunt with binoculars in my hands which IME is more useful than a rifle. It was a real eye opener when I started hunting timber with binoculars in my hands instead of a rifle. I see a lot more deer before they see me, than when relying on my bare eyeballs. They do have some annoying drawbacks but so far it's been worth it. Different strokes for different folks I guess. The only other good alternative looks to be a kifaru gunbearer, but you are then tied to your pack for a carrying device.

Oh yeah, and they have worked well enough with most packs, for me. Much better than a standard sling and much, much better than strapping your rifle to the pack. I don't think they would work very well with trekking poles but I haven't tried it.

I have been using Safari slings for a long time. At least 10 years if not longer. bit of pain in the ass if you're slogging up a steep heavily bushed slope, but you can use it in the conventional manner in that case. Otherwise, one simple movement gets your firearm to the shoulder. Probably the best when using a backpack.

Among the other slings that I have, I also have a Vero Vellini double sling. It's really comfortable, but not backpack friendly, it's okay with a very small day or fanny pack. Deployment is slow.

All in all, I like the Safari sling the best.

I have a leather sling made by Levy's Leather. It flares out wide and has suede backing. levysleathers.com/product;cat,853;item,711;Oil-Tan-Leather-Rifle-Slings-S26E (http://www.levysleathers.com/product;cat,853;item,711;Oil-Tan-Leather-Rifle-Slings-S26E) I accidentally cross threaded the screws on it and one quick email later and they mailed me out a new set of screws. The price may seem steep at $80 msrp but look around, some hunting stores in bc sell them for $40

I like the Butler Creek Alaskan. I have these on 2 of my rifles now and my first one is about 15 yrs old and still is in good shape. One of mine has the extra bullet holders and the other one doesn't and I very seldom use the bullet holder. The strap really sits good on the shoulder even when I have a backpack on and it doesn't slip off the shoulder like lots of the slings do. Best of all it has a shock cord built in and that makes a huge difference when you have to walk many miles as it really softens the load on your shoulder.

I'm considering switching to a safari sling, but wanted to get some advice from those who use one. Will an ammo butt cuff interfere with the sling in any way? Thanks for your replies.
