Hello,

I don't know if any of you're interested or not, but I have added the BC Wildlife Management Units to Google Earth.

EDIT

Here is a link to the file: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0ASMww1Ddr0eW1mQXc0QlJsY2s

These can be added to your GPS using the method outlined in this post:

http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=71223 page 2 I think

Slinky Pickle has added another source for the file a few posts below if you are unable to download from Google Docs.

Cheers,

Chris

Being a bit long in the tooth (getting old) (but not necessarily mature :)) I have to ask....What's a torrent? Maybe you could send me the file. I'd appreciate it.

I had to save it as a zip file because web browsers wanted to open the file instead of saving it.

I hate to sound stupid but i've never been very good at GE. What do i click on to get the MU's to show. The original program i had worked okay quite some time ago until the government decided to screw it up to improve it.

This program works well but there is a feature that is annoying. Once the MU is dispayed on the map everytime you click to zoom in or out the bubble pops up saying what mu you are in and you have to click it off. It gets very old having to do this 50 times if you are researching an area. Any way to stop the MU bubble from popping up everytime?

Hello,

I have refined the file. It now scrolls smoothly and as lmw noted it had popups with every click(those are gone). As well I have uploaded it on Google Docs for those that had torrent issues.

Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0ASMww1Ddr0eW1mQXc0QlJsY2s

Maybe Slinky Pickle could host the file as well?

Cheers,

Chris

Hey CAC

Thank you for the help and for me personally it couldn't have come at a better time. I have been trying to sort out my LEH areas for this year quite a bit lately. I have 2 monitors and always have both google and mapsource open simultaneously to figure out the MU's.

Cheers

Beautiful! Thanks CAC. There is an area where I hunt which made me a little nervous as to exactly which unit I was in. Not only a change from one unit to another within a region, but a change from one region to another. Very different regs. Now I can be sure and I can bring a google earth photo copy with me should I be questioned by the c.o.
Great stuff!!!

No Problem.

I am planning on moving back to BC this summer and figured I should map the Units as I did for AB. The maps in Alberta that the government provides are horrible as well. So it was really a selfish motivation.:)

I got a PM a while ago asking if there was anything like this available for Saskatchewan. Unfortunately I cleaned out my message box and don't know who it came from. Have you looked at what, if any, info is avaliable for Saskatchewan?

Oh, and again, great work!

Great job, thanks. Its a good map to have because what I thought was Reg. 8 is still actually Reg. 3. Good to know for late season.

Hi Slinky,

I contacted the Gov of Sask to get the data required. This was the response:

Hi Chris, Our current wildlife management zone database does not meet GIS standards and therefore is unavailable to the public. Updates are in the works to allow this information sharing. Unfortunately this information will not be available in the near future.

I am hoping this was partially my doing. When I contacted them last year about Google Earth maps they had no idea that B.C. had this set up. They even asked for me to send them the link for download so they could have a look. Sounds like the gears are turning but the finances are lagging.

Instead of starting a new thread thought i'd bump this. Is there an overlay for specific maps in the regs? Like no hunting, or closed areas so you can see a more defined border of where you can or can't hunt. the maps in the regs as i'm sure you all know aren't super specific.

Selfish maybe, but sharing it was definitely unselfish. Thanks for that. It works slick and is a great tool not only to research familiar hunting areas but also to explore new ones. We all owe you one.

The government has created a better version a few years back. http://openmaps.gov.bc.ca/kml/geo/layers/WHSE_WILDLIFE_MANAGEMENT.WAA_WILDLIFE_MGMT_UNITS_S VW.kml It should so everything.

So, I have had the DataBC Web Map Library in Google Earth for several years. I'm sure there have been changes made to this government website during that time. Would those changes automatically update on my computer or should I delete the whole Library and redownload the current version from time to time?
That seems unlikely, but I have never been directed to make any updates.

The data file is actually just a link to the government provided web data so if they update anything on their end you're automatically updated on your end. There''s no need to download anything more recent.
