I'm in the market for a Range finder and will be my first year with compound bow. Just wondering if i should look for one with the ARC or is it not needed.
thanks Kevin

Short answer is YES - it's needed.

Especially when/if your shots are up or down hill at anything greater than a 10-degree angle, and any further away than 15 yards at that angle.

Good luck out there......

Absolutely!
Don't buy a short range "archery" model though. They are cheaper because the lazer doesn't have the same pinpoint beam needed for longer range.

The Nikon Rifleman has proved itself very reliable and works well in wet or foggy weather. It has rifle and bow mode. The Archers Choice model won't work through rain, snow or fog. Ditto for the Bushnell, Chuck Adams bow model.

Bushnell 1200 Arc great for rifle or bow, well worth the price.

Yes, go with the true distance feature, if you have to step up to a range finder for archery.

Are range finders allowed in 3-D matches ?

Go with a model that has the ARC option. It's a very important feature if you will ever find yourself bow hunting the mountains.
I've been on a few trips where we found ourselves in situations where the true balistic range and the non "arc" range have varied by 10-15yrds within bow range.

It's nice to know exactly what pin to use in those situations.

If leica ever gets around to offering an ARC model, I'd take the bait!:)

IIRC Leica does the angle, and has ballistic software, but not just a simple true horizontal distance ?

I just ordered the Nikon riflehunter 1000 with ARC, got it for $380 from Eagle Optics. Cant wait to get it and test it out, it has great reviews and looks like it should do everything I need and more.
I picked this one as I will be bow and rifle hunting with it.

Range finders are awesome! I bought one, Bushnell with ARC. Even in the tree stand I found it very useful. Picked up spots where I could see game crossing, memorized the yardage and I was golden.
Having said all that, my friend lost a deer because I ranged it and by the time he picked up his bow, the deer was gone. The funny thing was, he was right about his estimation of the distance.

Looks like Leica has true horizontal distance on the forthcoming CRF1600B that is supposed to be available in June. If the new unit is as good as the CRF1200 I've had since they came out (2005?) it would be a fine product (in my experience).

I've been using the bushnell scout 1000 with arc for 4 years now. No problems. Only one con I have with it isotope would be better with a red led readout. Good for low light conditions.
Better yet why has no rangefinder came out with switchable green/red readout like some red dot scopes have. I'd buy one right away

The Nikon Riflehunter 1000 that I just bought changes the readouts from black/grey to orange in low light conditions making readouts a bit easier. check it out, looks pretty handy.
