picked up 4 nice springs this morning off sooke-all 12-15 lb-American hatchery fish....while DFO concentrates on ''wild salmon''-and tells us we have to cut our quota-again.

One thing that is evident-we need a PROVINCIAL Department of Fisheries, responsable to the BC sports/commercial fishery, clearly the FEDERAL DFO isn't interested in the needs of BC Commercial/Sports fishermen.Ottawa is just too far away to know or care.It isn't any skin off their backs if the BC fishery goes down the tube-like the East Coast cod fishery

If fishery policy actually became a real election issue, I'd bet you'd see more action on the political front, instead of just allowing the fishery "wind-down" to the level of a bargaining chip.

Clearly, the DFO's priorities are enough Chinook for the First Nations,Whales,Seals, enough to ensure DFO jobs-and if there's any left after that-the sports fishery....they say if we want to go fishing,we can always ''target other species''[pinks]

Nope-I say that if we want to see any meaningful change-the DFO MUST be run Provincially-leaving it Federal virtually guarantees status quo because they have no vested interest in ensuring a healthy commercial/sports fishery. All they really want is our licence fees....

its well known that the 12-15 lb chinook we are catching off Sooke right now are not our usual winter springs-they are the early American run....and clipped means they are hatchery fish.We are closing hatcheries -the Americans have rebuilt their sports fishery with hatchery fish -and its working-all the way down to California.
