I am thinking about getting one or the other. I do not want a typical 50. The size is one thing, the mounting height is quite another. The VX-3L seems like a good idea. Advantages of a 50 but the lower profile of a 40.

Anyone done any side by side comparisons with these two models, especially in low light situations? Is there a noticeable difference? Did you have problems mounting the 50 with bases that you previously used for a 40? Anything else I should be thinking about?

Get the VX-3L 4.5-14 x 50 with CDS system - i have not compared the 50 with the reg 40 but it does let in more light by specs - same basic size but the VX3L does weights 4 oz more - 17 oz for the big guy 13 oz for the 40 mm !
Cheers RJ

I have both... but VxL 3.5-10x50 & 4.5-14x40mm both in B&C... I like the slimmer 40mm.
Noticeable difference? Doubt it, not that I can tell.
Not sure about bases as they both sit on their own rifle.

I read ths article a year or so ago and it answered quite a few questions I had about scopes. The advice on this forum is fantastic but this article broke down some of the differences between 40mm and 50mm scopes. I have read some things from this web site that I raise an eyebrow at but I found this info helpful.
