While cutting some firewood this spring, I came across a pile of bones strewn all over the place. After a short look around I found a skull plate with antlers of a nice 5x5 elk. The area is 6 point bull only. Is it legal to pick these up and bring them home? Looks like a cougar or coyotes fed very well during the winter. Not sure of the ins and outs of shed hunting.

Leave 'em for the squirrels, or face a ticket.

You could try for a permit, but likely would just get a headache.

Take some pics of the bones etc and haul them home.

If it's a shed antler, naturally dropped, then yes. If it's attached to a skull, then technically no. If you really want it, I'd just call or email a CO. They might say "have at 'er" and you're clear. Might say. :D

You need a Wildlife Act permit to legally possess these if not sheds. Costs about $70!

On top of all of this...if a CO or whomever is responsible at the MOE feels that they are worth more than $200, they can take them and probably auction them off at the yearly auction.

And an actual Elk tag runs about $25.....gotta love gubment

Not going to endorse "illegal" activity, but I would not slight a guy who scavenged a set of elk antlers from the forest, if he had absolutely nothing to do with its demise.

Once they are in your house,,,how would anyone know that it wasn't shot in an area where 5pts are okay?

This is a pretty dumb rule, does the same rule apply to euro mount deer skulls or a bear skull or cow elk skull? I have found all of the above. I could see if you were packing out a 5x5 elk in a 6x area that still had hide on it but a bleached out squirrel chewed rack?

Its a grey area alright myself I don't think you would get a fine if a you came across a CO caring out a bleached set of 5x5 elk head gear that was chewed up by rodents..

I've been looking for some up where we fish cause there is lots of Elk, if I find one I'm bringing it home. It's April, I'm not dressed to hunt or have my gear becuase I'm fishing. With the shape they would be in, it would be very obvious to anyone who sees you that you did not just kill it. There is no open season where I'm talking about but I think if I found antlers I would pick em up.

Never said what "I" would do, simply stated that I wouldn't look down on a fellow outdoorsman for packing home a seasoned set of horns.
