View Full Version : Looking for a guy named Jack

The story.

About 16 years ago my hunting partner and I are on our annual Moose hunt.
With 2 days left in the season we are making our way up a trail and come accross a small cooler that is in the middle of the road, it's contents are spread around on the ground. Amongst the remains of the lunch box is a silver flask with the name "Jack" engraved on the front and "Happy 50th" on the back along with "Love Curt, Marni, Ethan & _____".

It was obvious to us that Jack had lost his cooler off his quad or off his tailgate while he was bouncing down the mountain. We figured he might retrace his steps on the last day of the season in search of his flask so we gathered up his cooler, put the flask inside and left it on the side of the trail.

On the evening of the last day while I was coming down the mountain, there was no sign of anyone traveling on the road or even in the valley. Assuming
Jack and his party had broke camp and left for home, I picked up his cooler and flask.

Ever since then we have taken "Jack" along on every one of our adventures.

Every year we have returned to 6-04, we have been in search of Jack, the 50+ year old hunter that lost his flask and I am sure would love to have it back.

It occured to me that HBC and all of it's members would be a great way to try and reunite Jack with his flask.

So does anybody know a 65+ year old Jack, with Kids (or grandkids) named Kurt, Marni, Ethan & one more. He was hunting north of Ootsa lake in about 94-97.

If the story plays out the way it is laid out, Jack's daughter lives in town, so he may come to visit at some point. It would be good to let him know what his flask has been up to all these years. Yes indeed, that little flask has held a few gallons of some fine scotch, and it has been tipped on many awsome adventures.

I am going to fill it up before I send it on its way. It has never left home empty, no need to start now.

When I first saw this thread, I thought that it would be pretty neat if the flask ever found its original owner, but didn't think it would ever happen. I come back today and HOLY MACKEREL! A few posts later and looks like it has happened. Very cool story and I wish I could see the look on Jack's face when he gets it back. This is the kind of stuff that these forums should be doing more of. Good job for starting this thread Marlin, bet you were kind of surprised as well. Brings back a little faith in people.

So, how many guys made this thread their first stop of the morning just to check in and see if ol' Jack has been found? I'll admit that I checked "way" too many times last night and then a few times already this morning.

Now I'm off to see how far I can get up a hill before I get stuck. I'm sure that before the day is out I will be sitting on a stump somewhere thinking about this thread.

Mike

Absolutely Mike, If the internet is good for nothing else, it will at least be said that it was the best "lost and found" tool ever.
Particularly for small sentimental items. Of course the whole gig depends on the finder and thier willingness to part with thier "new" posession.
Also it would have to have a name on it or be unique in some way. Obviously in my case this flask has enough clues that with Mr Pickles search skills and the internets massive information archive, it is almost home.

So the morral of the story is keep putting your name on your prized items, (Same reason your Mom would put your name on your underwear) I would suggest your email addy. Even on a piece of tape on an inside flap or compartment, at least it will create a chance you might get it back.

Good story, just read it.

Know the family, hunted up there in the past as well. There are 3 generations worth of hunting stories in that family in that area, and they're now getting into the 4th generation of hunters. Jack's been hunting up there since he was a kid.

Glad you were able to put it all together.

I got Jacks number, I am going to let Marni call him this evening, I gave her the HBC URL so she is going to check this thread.
Idealy we will get Jack online here and he can tell us about the trip he lost his flask on.
She said he loves a good story, so he should fit right in around here.

As for my memory it is clearly shot because it was only 11 yrs ago that Jack lost his flask. I thought it was longer than that.

Uncle Jack is the retired Firefighter, Jack Flask is Marni's Dad.

Well, there was a twist in the seach for Jack that you must have missed, Jack MacIntosh is Marni's Uncle.
He is on Facebook so I was not too worried about putting his name out there since he has taken that step himself.
Jack, Marni's dad and the owner of the flask, might not want his name on the interweb. Maybe he wont care, but its not my call.
Just my oldschool way of thinking.

Time definitley starts to play tricks on you as you near 50, add to that, almost 20 yrs of hunting the same area, same honey holes and happy spots. I was probably lucky to get within 5 years. Hell, I go back to the spot I shot my first deer and it was like I was there yesterday.......yet I can't remember what I had for dinner 2 days ago..LOL.

As far as the way this reunion came together, you and Goatguy are going to have to take most of the credit, I just followed the signs.

Marlin375,

You did the right thing by not revealing Jack's last name. It is not anyone's right to reveal it even though they "found it" on the Internet.

Years ago I read a short story in Gray's Sporting Journal about a birdhunter who sat down for a rest on a tree stump and found a watch stuffed in a cranny. It had an enscription something like " 1922's greatest grouse hunter " . Can't remember how it ended but I always loved the idea of the modern hunter finding the old hunter's watch.

That's the beauty of the sport we love. Each and every adventure is with you for a lifetime. They are very hard to forget, but easy to recall. The smells, the temperature, the detail, unforgettable. I started to write down some of my hunts so future generations of my kids, etc. could experience through my eyes if they never get the chance. Awesome Thread! Great story!!!

Nope but when he gets signed up here on HBC that would make a pretty good handle.
I am not going to use Jacks last name......I figure he should be able to enjoy the same anonimity as everyone else on HBC.

That would have being some coincidence LOL ! Good work thats just to funny!

Well, Marlin and all others involved, nicely done! Maybe too much is being made of all this, but watching this unfold has been a heck of a lot better read than the political debate threads, the "what gun, what bullet, what underwear???" threads, or the argument threads that seem to fill the off season. I hope I didn't just turn this into one with Ufish.

Welcome Jack, and make sure the gear is tied down :-D

Still have not heard from Jack Flask on site, or heard any replies to anyones query to where he is . l do see him in as a member but why have we not heard from him, at least to say Hi ? Is he that shy or is this just a real excellent post ,just to pass the winter blues , almost begining to think this post is the best crap ever. Do not get me wrong I do love it, except the final chapter still has to be played out., or another theory is another alias. What do you all think?

Just a re-bump on this old thread. I still go back every once in a while and re-read this one. I figured it was a good reminder that we can do good things when we put our minds to it. The recent quest to find the owner of a pack by showing some old pictures found with it reminded me of this one. The dumb ass remarks about whether there were naked pics on it made be go back and dig this one up so folks could see how it it can go if we leave the stupidity at home.

Well since I was pretty close to this story  and since my partner has not been on here for awhile,,,I will give a brief update. Our main man Jack was contacted and notified that the said flask was his for the asking. However, it seems Jack no longer partakes in the spirits so he indicated he had no use for the flask any longer. He thanked Marlin and wished him well and told him to continue using the flask on the adventures ahead of him. Seemed like a solid guy.

And now you know,,,

the rest of the story

Hi yourself Mike.

Before anybody starts a "looking for Marlin375 " thread. Buddy shot me a note saying this old thread got bumped.
Relived the thread myself just now and in the process recounted many of the places that flask had been over the years. I still have the flask, sadly it sprang a leak a few years ago so it got taken out of service.
As for me, I leak a bit more often, but I'm still in service...lol.
Not doing the forum thing as much anymore. If I can pass on one thing I have learned, and kind of related to this thread and the memories lost over my time spent adventuring around BC. More for you young guys that are just starting to make memories....KEEP A JOURNAL. (Not on your phone) it is crazy how a few written words from a trip 30 years ago will bring back your forgotten but extremely fond and valuable experiences.

Kind Regards

Marlin375
