Trout fishing in April

Hi

I am planning a trip for some trout fishing during the April long weekend, now I have never fished for them this early and I was wondering if the Island rivers are productive that time of the year. Or would it be more productive to head towards the Kamloops area and fish around there.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and a nice report with pics if we are successful will be provided :)

The upper Cowichan can be productive in April on the fly. Try minnow patterns as the big browns as well as bows and cutties will be feasting on salmon fry. Hopefully the river drops and clears up by then. She's pretty high and muddy after this big rain and snow melt right now.

I guess the Bella Coola cut throats are pretty hot right now. I know you said Island... but yeah

theres still ice on the lakes up here in the interior at that time

Should be good in most lower elevation lakes on the island then, and definitely good troutin' in the Cowy if the water's right.

Very nice.. I grew up in Duncan, have been fishing the cowichan since I could hold a rod and have yet to catch a bloody brown! grrrrr.. lol

Thanks for all the help, Island it is then. Hope we can catch a couple of those browns....Are there any specific minnow patterns that you guys would recommend for the cowichan

If you are Island bound and have a boat, I'd suggest a boo at Great Central in April. It holds some awfully BIG Cutties, and that's generally when we start to target on them. Fry patterns RULE! :twisted:
