Just bought two new Moultrie i35 trail cams to try out. Wondering if anyone has any tricks they've learned from experience regarding camera set up. I set one up in the house for a while to try out and now have one in my parents field where there is some deer traffic. Already broke one of the buckles on the strap while strapping it to a tree.

position it at the junction of 2 or 3 trails to increase odds of getting some pics.

try to keep it angled down the trail rather than at a 90 degree angle, reduces ass shots

If possible, point it north so that the sun does not blind it or cause false triggers.

Like others have said, try to point camera up or down a trail rather than across it.

Make sure your camera is secure. Camera movement can cause false triggers due to heat source movement in the field of view.

Also, make sure to take your regular digital camera along when you go to check the trail cam. That way you can check out what pictures are on it while you're still in the field.

Dont tell anyone where it is. You might end up with nudie pics of your buddy on it.

watch for branchs or salal that could trigger your camera when it gets windy, also on the island Bracken fern can grow real quick in the spring.

You might have to tuck a branch between the camera and tree if the tree has a good lean on it, don't want the sensor pointing to low or high. Every one before me made good points. Even when angling it down the trail put the cam on a tree a few feet away from the trail. Also if your using it on a trail don't walk down the trail to check your cam. Deer will avoid that section of trail specially if your checking the cam frequently.

Great info guys, just what I was looking for. Thanks for the links Whipper, more good info. Think I'll have to go check my cam already - hadnt thought about the long grass moving in the wind and setting the cam off. Probably have a few hundred nice grass pics already!

Hahahaha.... Classic Moultrie. I broke mine first pull too... Next comes the sh!t plastic mounting tabs, and then you'll be TYING that thing to a tree. I wouldn't wish Moultrie products or their crappy customer service on anybody (they won't warranty the plastic even if it's in your 1 year period - my entire camera is plastic!!!).

Good luck with your Cam. Mine does take decent pics, I'll give them that... but for something that was considered "top-of-the-line" when I got it, I was very dissapointed in it's overal quality. They won't get me twice.

most cameras aren't motion activated, they go by infared heat, so wind usually isn't a problem

I am going to a youth outdoor club tomorrow to talk to the kids about setting trail cameras. I have a good idea about what to say but if anyone has any tips that aren't already listed on this older thread it would be appreciated.
