I've never bothered hunting bears. In fact I've only killed one black bear. I was asked a question recently,by a co worker, that I couldn't answer.

Aside from the obvious size difference are there any other differences between grizzly and a black bear. I'm talking skinned out here.

Lets say you have a huge black and a small grizz skull would you be able to tell?

Thanks

Top back molars are usually over an inch in length on a grizzly. Black bears are under 1 inch

There's also a difference in the # of holes in one area of the skulls for the nerves. Just can't remember which is which:confused:.

As I recall, I think the nasal length to overall length ratio is different as well.

I'll let you know tomarrow....... but I know my grizz skull has what looks like a pellet hole in the top of his head???? Maybe some chicken hunter had a close encounter?
