When I come across ads, especially on Craigslist of people selling their antlers, whether they are the ones that shot them or not, I often wonder the legalites of it. Is it totally legal?

Yes, but you need a tag number or a permit if they are attached to a scull plate or have been sawn off, but not for sheds.

When I lived in The Fort, we would head out on quads in late April/through May and pick up moose sheds from their wintering range.

Some weekends we would make $2-300 on sheds. I had one that was a matched pair that measured 55", that one set got me $300.

There was this older guy in a Red Ford w/a trailer who would pay in cash (and would barter) for any antlers. When we found where there was an indian kill (they usually left the skull and antlers, minus tongue and nose), we would go get a permit from the gov agent and sell them.

Good way to make some hunting cash for the up coming season.

Cheers
