I got back yesterday from two weeks hunting up by Quesnel area.My dad and I were supposed to be going for moose with a friend of his who had an LEH for bull moose in 7-23C.At the last minute he had some health problems and had to back out.
We decided to head to 5-02d were I had an LEH for mule deer doe. Also we knew the area fairly well from previous moose hunts. We borrowed my sisters 12' trailer and headed off saturday morning thanksgiving weekend.
Did some driving and checking area sunday night and didnt find anything promising. We decided to check an area that we always saw deer monday morning. The area we went to had changed alot in the two years since we had been there, were before there had been a few small cut blocks mixed with lots of timber there were fresh huge cut blocks everywhere.
We decided to check one small cut block before heading back for lunch, having seen nothing yet we weren't very optomistic that morning. We got out and glassed the area from a vantage point and nothing but a bunch of cattle. We started driving through the cut block and looking when my dad says "there's your doe".I turned and looked were he was looking and not 100yards away there's a bunch of does looking at me.
I see above the does another deer and immediately I know its a buck, dad shuts the truck off we both load our guns as quickly as we can. He's standing broadside wathching us calm as can be but as soon as we get loaded and ready for a shot he starts to take off.My dad gets a head shot as hes walking between some burn piles but seems to miss.As he turns and heads out of there I get a shot and my dad shoots again as well.
We dont see him go down and we both dont feel good about our shots as he was moving. We give him some time then head up to check for blood, we are both ckecking were we thought he went when I see a deer ass between some logs turns out one of us(dad says him I say otherwise)got him behind the left ear and exit right nose. Not a bad deer 5x4 140 pounds to the butcher. My dad insisted he tag it.
Wednesday we were putting pressure on ourselves to get the doe to take in to the butcher with the buck.Head out road hunting in the morning dont see anything all morning, I decide to get my dad to drop me off in a cut block with a deactivated road to walk.
Right away I see a nice cow moose,I walk to the end of the cut block and start coming back and I look to my left and theres two does looking at me 100 yards away but they spook and take off. I decide to take a look where they were, I walk over and right at the timber line about 30 yards away a big doe is looking at me.One shot she didnt go 10 feet. The heart was split in half.
Took the deer in to the butcher got some more deer tags and a moose tag and headed to 7-6 for imm. moose.Saw nothing but hunters up there.Did some trout fishing at a bunch of lakes, ate alot of grouse then decided to head back to 5-15 were there were less hunters and I could still take a buck.
Saw lots of moose but not much for deer, ate some more grouse and trout, over all it was a awesome vacation.
