Hi folks.

What say ye.

What would be a useful lightweight firearm to carry while picking berries? What would you choose and why?

Dlask 870 8.5" barrel, loaded with Brenekke slugs in a thigh holster.

Why?
Because it's not tooo heavy and it's readily accessible on your thigh and it looks badass

If I felt the need, I'd pack my 18" barreled Maverick 88 12 guage, and b'ar spray.

Winchester Trapper 30-30.

Ideal choice, carbine would be next! .30-30 is all you need, but most people don't need a gun for picking berries!!!

Would 30-30 penetrate the skin and flesh of a blackberry though?

I guess it depends on the Berry. Might have to use LeverRevolutions for charging berries!

All kidding aside, that's what I carry berry picking/fishing/camping/hiking non-hunting season.

Depends on where you berry pick.

The spots I go to all one needs is a tin hat, then you'll fit in with everybody else.

With a premium bullet at 10 to 15 yards you should get a through and through

I've never ran into a bear while berry picking, the noise you make will scare a bear away every time. Unless your really sneaking up on the berries, then you might spook a bear:) I have never heard of anybody ever having trouble with a bear over berries. I can see if you were trying to pick dead winter kill leftovers, then you could bring a gun. I wouldn't worry about bears as much as getting poked by the thorns of the berry bush.

Never saw thorns on a blue berry bush? Had more challenges with the berry picking ladies out in the woods anyway!

I dont usually go pickin berries, but if I did, i'd bring my coastal marine winchester defender.... AKA "my fishin gun".

12 gauge 870 with 14" barrel...shooting 3" slugs...tough enough to take on any wild berry!

I have carried my winchest trapper in 44 mag for the last 6 years everywhere I go when not hunting. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Holds 9 in the magazine so you have lots of shells for shooting over heads etc, and don't have to worry about running out if things get hairy.

Bear spray, a buddy and a dog. Going with another person is probably the best defense, talking and making some noise, and you'll never see a bear.

Plus, if you go with someone else, you just have to outrun them, and not the bear. Good tip right there!

We often pick Saskatoons, Choke Cherries, Junipers, etc. around our Dacha and often have to fend of predatory attacks from Blue Jays, Squirrels and the like. We take our two Duck Tollers along as defense.
If berry hunting, make sure you have your liscence and tags with you.

A bear in a berry patch is likely a bear in a good mood. If yogi is chowing down on good berries, the last thing he wants to do is take time to go chasing some skinny monkey with a bucket.
