I know im posting this thread quite a bit late but i still feel like i should share it with everyone. Anyways every year my dad and i go on a big summer hunt usually up the alaska highway somewhere. For the past few years we have been going just past buckinghorse and up the Redfern trail into the mountains there. This year we decided a sheep hunt, we were to head into the mountains near toad river. As this was my first sheep hunt i knew they were going to be hard to hunt but on the drive up we saw lots of sheep on the road and kept getting more excited.

So we got set up the day before opening at the trail head and camped out there for the night. So we got up fairly early and drove the quad up the valley as far as we could, we ended up stopping at a creek that was too deep to cross the quad with.

So that is where we started to hike up. It was a really nice day out, it was a nice easy hike up the valley as we were on a quad trail. A couple hours and a few km up the valley we had our lunch and took a nap.

So it was about another hour up the trail where we decided to set up camp. We were about 5 km from the atv. Later that night we thought we would just take a light pack with some snacks and guns up the valley a bit farther to check it out. The valley only ended up going approx another 3 km. But that night we had saw a couple 3/4 curls rams in the valley bottom, about a dozen ewes at the end of the valley and a couple rams which appeared like they could be legal. Couldnt quite tell as they were skylined right at the top of the mountain we were beside. Also had saw a goat and a caribou. Ths all go me really excited. The rams at the top of the mountain had dropped down to the other side of the mountain and there was no easy way to get there, we figured we shouldnt go after them.

The nest day we hiked up a basin hoping to get to the top of the mountain to get a good look around. Going up the mountain was terrible, it was all shale. Every two steps up you slid back down one. At about 4 pm we were about two thirds up the mountain with still plenty to go we decided to head back to camp. That day we hadnt seen much for game except the same caribou we saw the day before.

Day three we figured since we had pretty much seen everything that valley has to offer that we would hike out and head into a different area. On the way out all we saw for game was a cow moose and a calf.

So we ended up hiking up a mountain near the racing river. Seemed like it took forever to get there.

http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s484/pantherDL91/sheephunt4.jpg

So a few hours later we got to where we wanted and there was plenty sign of sheep, we set up the tent about half way up the mountain had ourselves a snack, took a nap and then hiked up around the mountain some more.

http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s484/pantherDL91/sheephunt13.jpg

Kept seeing more and more sign of sheep. We had stopped at this bluff because we had a good view of everywhere around us. Never saw much so we went back to camp. on the way back we were on the hillside above our camp hiking down to it and we saw this big brown thing down it the bushes by our camp, just thinking a grizzly is just what we needed. So were glassing it and couldnt get a good view because of the big bushes it was going thhrough. Finally came into the open and it was a porcupine... So got back to camp and had dinner. Sitting there eating our freeze dried meals my dad saw something skylined on the mountain in front of us so we pulled out the spotting scope and started glassing it, the spotting scope wouldnt focus properly so we just got it perfect scoped in on it and it flew away... it was an eagle. I was excited i thought we had found a sheep. These animals can be very decieving.

So as our hunt was coming to an end my dad let me sleep in the next day and we hiked out that afternoon. Never got anything this trip but thats just sheep hunting, it can never be too easy. Its always good to get out in the bush with my dad for some quality time. Times like these will be in my memory forever. Thanks for the trip dad, cant wait to see what kind of a hunt we go on this year.

Those planks are what we actually think is an part of an old mine up there. Possibly the churchill mine.

The "Father Son" hunt sounds great and much like one we made in 2007 that we have named "Tour de Spatsizi". At the time certain parts of the hunt were physically tough, but after time passes you tend to only remember how fun it really was.

Long days back and forth to camp, much of it in the dark, and steep hikes to chase the rams. In the end a wide-flaring 9-year-old ram for my son, his first. Working hard for something as a team, whether successful or not, is always a positive life lesson and will be memorable forever.

Hopefully we will have many more trips down the ol' trail.

My dad is just getting into big game hunting - at 67 years old! After spending 35 years behind a desk he says now hes in the best shape of his life. This past season we had a great time chasing blacktails on VI but I am hoping to do a similar trip to yours with my dad soon. Thanks for the inspiration.
