I have recently inherited a 14' aluminum boat. It's and older boat and a tad bit on the heavy side, short transom. My question is who makes a good reliable short leg 2 stroke in the 15hp range?

Thanks in advance.

Evenrude or Johnson Have never given me any problems. Mercureys seem to be good also. I have not used any of the offshore outbourds.

Depending on how heavy and how wide, you might want to consider something in the 20 or 25 range.
I had a 14 seanymph decked out with nice seats, battery and depth sounder and originally it had a nice new 15hp evenrude. Put three people into it and it wallowed. Barely made it to plane with two.
Swapped out for a 3 cyl. Johnson with a 3 blade prop. No problem coming up on plane and it idled just right for trolling. When it was time to get up and go, it got up and went.

I had a 14 ft Lund for about 15 years. All I ever had on it was 20hp Johnson. It was a bit sluggish out of the hole with 3 adults on board but with 2 was no problem. One time I tried out a 25 Yamaha for a day. Was a world of difference, to the better.

Any particular reason why you'd want a 2 stroke? You'd save a bit of weight that way but newish Suzuki, Honda or Yammy 15 hp four stokes won't weigh much over a hundred pounds - tons quieter, sip the fuel, no smoke no sheen on the water ....

I've got a few 15hp Merc 2-strokes left if your in interested in new. This is the last year they are going to be available. The 2-stroke weighs 76lbs vs 100-115lbs for most of the 4-stroke 15hp models....

Well one of the reason I wanted a 2 stroke was because of the weight issue, and short transom, also I like the instant power and response in a 2 stroke, which, and please do correct me if I'm wrong, you don't get in a four stroke. Also again, if I'm wrong correct me, but easier to work on if needed?

I would look at the 25hp mercury (tohatsu) seapro, it has all stainless fasteners, oversize geargase, only weighs 110lbs. Brand new only $2,800. Less money than a 9.9 fourstroke. I know cascade marine has them in stock but not sure about leg length.. If you still need more power it can be upgraded to 30hp by removing the restrictor behind the carb.

You will not be happy if you are out in the fraser heading upstream with 3 large men on board and only a 15hp.

I've got a big old 14' Lund with a 30hp Yamaha on it.
A bit overkill, but full of adults and can still pull the tube out of the water with kids in it.
If I had to do it again, I think a 20-25 would be adequate.
A 15hp would do well if you aren't going to load the boat too badly.
My 30hp is a three cylinder, oil injected and purrs like a Singer.
Nice that I can have a conversation with my fishing buddy when trolling.
If you are going to spend the $$, Yamaha has my vote.

Yeah I wasn't planning on loading up the boat 2 much. Just something for me and the kids, to be honest I can recall the dimensions on it, it's 14 long and probable 4-5 feet abeam at the stern. It has the short transom on it, so I'm trying to keep the motor weight to a minimum while Still having power.

The boat should have a MOT or DOT plate riveted into it somewhere on the transom. It will have HP, people /weight restrictions on it.

I bought a new 15 hp 2 stroke Yamaha last year - its on a G3 14 ft Yamaha boat - works excellent ! Very little smoke with Syn 2 stroke oil at 100-1 mix ! RJ
