Wife wants a lil boat to get out on the local lakes that we can haul in our ranger and store pretty easily at home in the garage.. I was looking at the Tracker 10' Jon boat... Just wondering if anyone has one and what they think about them? Will be putting a electric motor on it to get around the water..

I have a 11 ft Harbor Craft Flyfisher - its a flat bottom & very similar to the tracker jon boat - i use a 43 lb thrust minnkota motor with on mine . Light enough and small enough to move around easy - Works very well - just stay away from rough water with a flat bottom and you will be fine !

The tracker is junk, but inexpensive. I ended up with a lund jon boat, by far superior but you pay for it. Depends how hard you'll beat on it I suppose.

If that is the one I'm thinking of it has fairly low sides which makes them a little dicey with two people, excellent for a single user though.

10 ft aluminum is a good size, light enough for two even one person to unload and move around with out to much trouble.

Size does matter
Sometimes my 14 isn't big enough

I recently got a 12' Port-a- Bote and am amazed at how stable it is in the water I can stand up to cast and feel secure, and it is light enough (66LB.) for me to load atop of the truck. I have had several aluminum boats and none are as stable as this one. You could leave it assembled and pull it on a trailer or fold it up and put it on roof racks. I use a 6hp gas and an electric for trolling, great boat. They also come in 8' 10' 12' 14'.

I know it doesnt sound special but a 12' tinboat will go in a Ranger and is easy enough to move with 2 people. You can put 2 people very comfortable in it. You can stick anything from a Electric right up to a 8hp gaser on it. The boat wont slap the water if it gets rougher, it will fish worse water then you and your wife will want to be in. 2 people can stand up and cast in it if the weather permits. They track nicer in the water as well.

It will be a bit more weight then a 10'er but you will gain more comfort. IMO a 12' tin is the perfect compromise between weight and size. AND! they are everywhere and cheap and you can get a trailer for it if you wish.

Lots of decent small boats on craigslist. Stick with a 12 foot if there will be 2 of you.

I've got a 10' jon boat...had it for over 20 years and absolutely love it. It's light, will fit in/on your Ranger easily, and it's easy to carry down to the water.
No doubt a 12 of 14 would be nicer sometimes....more stable and better it if gets a bit rough, but I've fished lakes all over the province in my little tin boat and never had a problem.

I have a 12 foot flatty .Great for two or even 3 people .I would put a small gas outboard on it rather than relying on batteries. One person can easily load up and launch these boats .

Stay away from the 10' -32" ! They are tippy and dangerous for 1 person and can be deadly for 2! You'll seldom say"I wish I had a smaller boat", But I often hear "I wish I had a bigger boat" 12'-36" would be my minimum, and I'd prefer 40" on the water. Look carefully at the Max wt tolerances on the DOT plate. Think about you, wife, + gear, dog, tackle, anchors, motor, battery. It all adds up quickly.

The 1232 is good for 2 and only 86 lbs, 1236 is quite a bit more stable, but is also 50 lbs heavier, would buy another 1232 in a heart beat.

I agree re: the 12 -36 assessment. The Lund Jon boat 12-32 Max load capacity of 295# on the plate. That's wifey at 135#, you at 160# No clothes, no gear, no motor, no battery, no dog. You've maxed out with nothing with you. That only sets up a dangerous situation, imho.

I had a 12' portabote for a while - wasn't crazy about it. Was a pain to set up and take down, particularly when it was cold -much easier to just throw a boat in the water.

personally I wouldn't go anything under 12 feet. 2 dudes, a dog and gear in a 12 footer is pretty cramped

I'll second the 12 ft. Aluminums.
Will hold 3 plus eqpt., can take a 9.8 hp or an electric and it fits on my Ranger. :)
When the water gets a bit rough, it's nice to have a "V" bottom rather than a flatty.
Lots available used, shop around.
