We have seen some incredible bucks show up on the big buck thread which helps with the winter doldrums. So lets see some of your Big Elk pics. Here are a few that were taken by my partner " Sweety ". And NO I am not gay. Sweety is all woman and is my answer to the perfect wife thread, even though we are not married but have been togeather 28 years. Hope you like em.

This bull does not score well because he is a bit gimpy, but he is an old warrior with beat up hooves and worn down teeth. We evaded me for a few years by calling to locate hunters, smart bull... and very chewy!

And R.J

Yes those are " some "of hers. The one looks bigger than he is. Nets 308, so still a good bull. Hunted that one for three years, never got him to make a peep even once. But he made the mistake of playing his game with me in an inch of snow that he had used on me easily 10 times before. The next time he tried that trick my sweety shot him at 20yds. An hour after starting the game. It's awesome when a plan comes togeather.

Actually it was very fortunate that I had a slight skiff of snow in the lion track and I had the hound on lead while we were trying to freshen up the track. If I had of turned loose, my hound would have been killed.

BlacktailStalker

In that respect yes... good thing you know your areas concerns.
Caught many a lion with several inches of snow in the track here...
Good luck.

I had seen that lion the day before while going to work. Chased after him, no hound, just me bayin'. Almost treed the bugger. He started up a big fir and then changed his mind. I hadn't seen wolf tracks for over a month as the local trapper had done well that season. The lion had made another move over night and I was just being cautious as the skiff was only an hour old. Wrecks can happen fast and I'm glad I went with my gut and kept him on lead. After that day I saw that lion track numerous times over the winter. Every time it had wolf tracks hot on the trail. I packed the rifle to work with me all winter long hoping to catch one of those wolves, but never saw them. Always fresh tracks every day. My timing was just off.

Whats the story behind this picture? i didn't see anyone ask about it, maybe its been discussed in a different thread. but I couldn't help but notice a lion in that tree, and the dogs looked occupied.

Yeah treed a cat further up the hill but the cat jumped and the dogs retreed it at the bottom of the mountain. On the way down I tripped over a fresh elk shed. I went back two months later and found the match, worked out pretty good

Ha Ha, yes,you shoot enough arrows and they start to connect once in a while!!! It helps if you take your bow for many walks too. I still hit the 3-D as much as I can. I don't worry about the score just shoot to kill every target. I believe it helps quite a bit when the real thing comes along.

Shot that bull on Sept 6th, up north in 7-50. I was hunting sheep and we were heading back to the main camp in the afternoon. I decided to take this one since sheep hunting was done for the day and we would be hunting the mountain next to camp the following day.

.... another bull we killed in the West Kootenays.
We would always comment about a small patch of deciduous trees up on a dry hillside off of the secondary hiway we would drive on on our way to our hunting grounds. We would always say, "we should check that out for a wallow one of these days". We did just that, was only about a 45 minute climb up off the side of the hiway.... 2 o'clock on a sunny Sept day. Got within about 50 yards, set up, and then ripped a big bugle into the Poplar stand.
F*@k me Friday, this bull fired back instantly and came running right at us. He hit the brakes at the edge of the green and then took one for the team at about 15-20 yards. From the time I bugled to when I shot was no mote than 8 - 10 seconds.
By far the easiest bigger bull we've killed.

http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd428/browndog100/Oldies/347001.jpg

Had good beam length which pushed his score up nicely.

Ourea,
Thanks for putting up the great pics, you have been fortunate to have been in on some great bulls. To me a good screaming match at close range is the pinacle of hunting. There is nothing out there that gets the heart pounding like that. Well.... except grizzly charges where you end up close enough to smell their breath. But that is not a good heart pounding.

Couldn't agree more about the elk, although I now hunt trophy bulls with little to no calling.
With elk hunting there is a bit of a love hate relationship in my better areas for big bulls.
The love is knowing we are in a prime area that can yield a big boy.....
The hate is knowing it's not a matter of "if" your gonna bump into a griz, but "when".
And yes, both situations certainly get the heart going!

Another West Kootenay gem I killed a while ago. And you would never guess who was with me.............yup, 358mag!!!
His front end pushed his numbers up, note the length of his bez's.
I don't put much emphasis on score but I believe 358mag ran a quick tape at 354".
And thanks again 358 as you have had a hand in so many great animals for other guys in our group.

For me it really does not matter if you have a big 340+ bull come in screaming at you or a smaller bull coming in all bulls as they are coming in screaming at you they will make your hair stand up on your head and your adrenalin get pumped up to no end this is what hooked me on elk hunting the gross scored on this guy was 359 a Roosevelt and he came in like a fright train I thought I was going to get killed..

Picture of me with my Roosevelt elk.. My buddy in this lower picture to the right he almost died as for me getting this elk out the elk ready to butcher was 812

pound bull elk shot on Vancouver Island in 1988 this elk was 10 years old the elk is a 9x8 believe it or not the picture was taken at 9am Oct 13th in dark second growth timber.

He came up out of a gully silently coming into the few subtle cow calls I had chirped on the ridge I was hunting prior to coming down.
He walked right in to me while hiking back to the truck as I spotted him and heard him roll some rocks ontheside hill two switchbacks away so I waited for him (he was road hunting for the pussy he thought he was after) to round the bend to I.d him.
The whole time i could hear some other bone head below me driving around from landing to landing pretty much belting bugles out of his truck window, waiting 30 seconds for an answer and carrying on lol
I got to watch him open his mouth to bugle several times but emitted no noise, likely due to the constant pressure in the area. I learned a lot seeing this unfold.

Hi Wayne,
Shanes bull grossed around 380 I think. 373 3/8 net. It was # 2 in the BC book at the time. The trophy of a lifetime for a couple of young guys. I drew a tag in the same area 2 years later and hunted hard for 2 weeks and couldn't find one even close to that one. Ah, the good old days. I think the odds were around 14 or 18:1.
