What is that antiquated thing beside the track?

I think it is a piece of technology used to help determine the relative age of a track.

A houndsman's trade secret. :-P

Funny how we can do that eh! Tear'n down the highway and out of nowhere slam on the brakes, jump out and I.D. a cat track while your passengers are still trying to pick themselves up off the floor of the truck.

Lol how true, my old lady always has to remind me that we are not hunting when I start to swerve of the highway looking for wild life on the hillsides or peoples yards and such.

You know I have been runing cat for 35 years & the cat that left that track is a lunker, not one of those little dinks that you flat landers run.
It looks like the moose that are over there dinks to.

the main pad on a large cat will be about 2 3/8's inches wide. The claw pads are not static and can make the print look larger or smaller relitive to how the cat is walking on them. It is always a good idea to look at several tracks to get a general size of the cougar. The track posted looks even larger then it is because the toe pads are spread but is a large Tom track that does not look to be melted out much at all. Melting can make it look larger. I guess Nait needs to know the lenght of that cell phone to put it in perspective.

2 3/8"s is bare minimum for a 'big' tom, off the Island. Saw and treed a female that was 2 2/8"s believe it or not, we guessed her to be over 110lbs which is 30 more than any BIG she over here.
Anyways 2 3/8's is here is equivalent to 2 4/8"-5/8" and yep, they get as big as 2 6/8" and one which was so, reiterated to me, went 15 11/16"s (yeah it can be rounded to 2 3/4" but its a game of 1/8"s when you're really into this shit... add in the strides, taking into consideration the grade the cat is walking on and you can be pretty damn close as to what you're looking at before you're looking at it )
A 2 5/8" will get any houndsman wet in the pants.
Heres one!
15 9/16"

Even half blind cat hunters can spot a track at speed......It's just what we do! I don't even have hounds anymore and I'm still watch'n the sides while cruise'n down the highway and cause'n premature wear on my brakes!

Just how do you figure that it is an Alberta cat? Houndsman said he was on his way to McBride. So if he was coming from the Shuswap, he would not be in Alberta unless he was taking the great circle route.

You houndsmen make sheep hunters look like beginners when it comes to offside communication between peers.

Makes for great reading though! Keep at it...
