I'm one of those horseless horse lovers. If anybody would like show off your steeds that would be great....it doesn't matter whether you're hunting on horseback or your animals are out in pasture. My daughter and I would love to see your pictures. (ps....it would really help with the winter blues).

I would love to volunteer at a horse adoption, unfortunately time doesn't permit me. I'm helping out with my husband's business, studying to become a paramedic, and once the girls come home from school....it's homework, making supper and everything else that comes my way.

Depends.....if you let yourself get into the 'show horse clicky crowd' who baby their 'My Little Ponies' their entire life and 7/8 of your $ will be spent on em......we'r talkin thousands a year pr head. ( such as a few of my past psycho X girlfreinds)
Now if you treat em as they really are ( resiliant animals with fur on them - wich means staying outside at night WONT kill em) , its $6 to $8 a hay bale...3rd of a bail a horse pr day , maybe some grain if you really want em to be happy.
Hell up north they HAVE to live through -40 and worse at times and DONT get water given to them......just a round bale rolled out...funny , their still alive in the spring.
Shake my head at the 'my little pony' gang that see 3 drops of rain and have to 'run to save teir babies'...
side note , my BEST horse EVER was bought for $700. and he can do WAY more shit than my freinds $30,000.00 jumper...

Most of the Little Pony people would shat chickens if they saw what a mountain horse is expected to ride up, through, and over every day that they are out on the trail.
This picture is a perfect case in point. This was the day we retrieved my first elk shot the day previous. The elk was located just below treeline in a hidden canyon that burned over forty years ago. Deadfall everywhere with a fairly steep rock strewn trail into the canyon then up through all the buckbrush and deadfall to just below treeline all to pack an elk off a mountain. The little sorrel in the fore of the picture was purchased at auction by my hunting partner for $50 when he covered his mouth to sneeze. No idea how old he is but he's still full of try.

Here is me, riding while pregnant with my 3rd daughter, I think I was 32 weeks? I rode right up till I was in 38 weeks and just to "fat" and uncomfortable to be able to get up on my horse. And the poor guy looked at me like ohhhh not again, every time I approached him with a saddle. I am 28 weeks prego with baby #4 and still riding! Got out for a good gallop last week! I think that is the last "good" ride I will get in this pregnancy :( Just nice slow walks now.

Winchester chick....I'm not on facebook...so of there is another way for you to post your pictures..that would be great. You were lucky to do any horseriding while pregnant. I managed to get 4 months of my pregnancy in while volunteering for the ambulance, two months after that I was in the hospital for five weeks and ended up having triplets at 32 weeks. It was quite an ordeal. I used to do alot of horseriding back in the 90's (trailrides) but it got too expensive for me to lease the horse since we needed a new car. I enjoy volunteering for the ambulance too...if I could combine horseriding with paramedics I would be one happy girl.

WOW triplets!!!! I am not sure how else to post a photo? pm me your email, I will send it to you that way! To bad you are in the LML, I am just over on the Island, if you were closer I would take you out for a ride some day! Being a mom, getting out for a ride is the best therapy out there!

I have heard it costs quite abit to care for a horse, food, vet bills etc. And why would you want to shoot a wild horse? I would consider myself blessed to see some in the wild. Cheers

Not sure if the cost of owning a horse has been gone over on here??? I am VERY lucky! We own our own land, we lease another 100 acres that we cut the hay off and sell enough that ours ends up not costing us any thing. I do my own hoof trimming, when I am not pregnant, I seem to get the odd unexpected vet bill. But over all my horses are cheap.

BUT....... if you have to board out a horse you are looking at alot more. My parents board horses, they are the cheapest place I know of, they charge $200/month, that includes a shelter a large paddock (about 1 acre) and 2 hay feedings per day. If you "think" your horses needs more than this, there is a "fancy" boarding stable down the road from me, they charge $500/month, your horse gets a chushy stall, gets put out side in a tiny little paddock during the day, they get fed 4 or 5 times per day, they get their blankets changed every time the weather changes........ all that crap. In the end I think the horses are less happy to live like that.

If you can keep your horse at home, hay can go from anywhere from $4.5-8 /bale a horses eats somewhere around 1/2 a bale per day. If you want to give them grain that price ranges. Then you have to do feet trimming ever 8 or so weeks, that costs about $45, more if you are having shoes put on the horse. Then vet bills, worming 2 or 3 times per year, $20 each time. Vaccines, change with every vet in each area. Or you can buy them on line and do your self, much cheaper!

Sufice to say buying a horse is cheap compared with OWNING a horse, and owning a GOOD one doesnt cost any more than owning a "bad" or actually sometimes less.
If I wasn't a farrier/ranch "vet"/hay hauler, not sure I'd own them.
