Got a fly tying kit around march of last year and with a little help off of youtube i started tying chironomids. today just got back from wholesale sports with some leech yarn and some marabou and started tying. only tied 2 but just wanted to get the hang of it. here are some pictures not the greatest pics was taken off my gopro, will post some more pictures of other flys i have made later

If you go to Flybc.com....you will likely get a few more responses than on a hunting site. Good start, only comment would be to thin out the tail a bit.

Looks good! I started tying my own end of july last year after i realized how expensive store bought flies are! I enjoy tying flies myself and its rewarding when you catch a fish on your own flies! I've got boxes of flies i've tied i should have some pictures for you tomorrow.

X2...Good start for sure. Thin them out a bit, sometimes less is more. I started tying flies years ago...still learning every day...keep tying away and don't worry too much about how much they look. I've had a lot of days on a lake without a bite, opened one of the fly boxes, looked at the ugliest looking thing I had, tied it on, and caught a decent fish.
....and oh ya...make the bed lol :-)

i'm not that fast probably about 3-6 mins to do the big dragons. theres a lot to them. and i really take my time and make sure i have tight turns and all the parts are really secured good. and for the eyes i burn 50 lb mono which can be reallly finicky. there not easy flies to tie my first few were prety ugly. but the ones in the pictures have caught a lot of fish (especially the bottom one) and are still holding strong so the extra time pays off.

As for the tail, i've heard with a long tail the fish will nibble the tail rather than the hook as well,

Will post some pictures tomorrow. I sponsor the fly-fishing club at school, cool to see how pumped the kids get when they catch something on a fly they tied. If you ever tie a tail too long don't cut the excess off, pluck it. Firmly grab the tail with the fingers of one hand to support the marabou and use your other hand to gradually pluck off the excess. Looks way more natural than cutting with scissors. You can tell if the tail is too long if you keep getting hits but don't hook up. The fish is grabbing the tail and letting it go when you try to set the hook. Keep up the good work, tying becomes extremely addictive.

Sneaky,
Fly tiers Bible, Get it at Chapters or online. It is cheap and well laid out. The other thing that is a good thing to do is read up an Entimology and fly fishing.
It will help you understand the life cycle of these bugs which in turn helps you fish them. Flybc.com as said is a great source of info, but dont lock us hunters out, some of us are addicted to two things! :)

Your flies are looking good, leaches are a great fly to start on, They are easy and teach you proportion as you have learned and fixed (Tails) Hackle size vs the hook shank to point depth etc. There is nothing better then catching a big fish on a fly you have tied for .25 cents. I only wish i could get off my ass a dust off my bench its been too long.

You can also buy it right off Amazon, My wife gets her books there. The send them right to our door. I have quite a number of "Pattern" books and this one s the best i have yet. There was another book SRUPP was talking about a long time ago and there was a number of guys who swore by it but it was huge money.

I have forund there are a few types of book out there. The how to fish book, The entimology book, the how to tie book and the combo of these book.
I like to buy specific books to learn specific things. And this book is well built, reasonable price, well "Steped" out and loads of flies in it.
How long have you been fly fishing?

for the original poster, when tying your leach patterns measure out your marabou against the length of the shank on your hook, and use that much on the tail. you don't want it too long and it should look natural. if possible, don't cut the tail feathers either as it doesn't look as natural in the water. good start though.

There are tons of websites as well that you can get information and fly recipes from including The Kalamalka Fly Fishers, Brian Chan (Rise Form), Phil Rowley, SFOTF, Freshwater Fishing Society of BC, GoFishBC, FlyGuys.....

Thanks Benthos. I really enjoy tying, experimenting with new materials (anti-static bags, cassette tape, VCR tape different animal hairs). As I said earlier it is a blast catching fish on something you tied and more so seeing the kids when they experience it.

Good Luck

Excellent flies guys, this is getting me pumped for the spring! I have been tying for close to 10 years now and I tie ALOT of leaches, my most productive pattern is a dubbed leach with a black tungsten bead head (body tied in various shades of Brown, Green, Maroon, Red and Black) I like to use the "fluffiest" maribou for the tail, done worry about the length when tying it, I like to add 4 strands of crystal flash the length of the tail in the tail portion of the fly as well. When fly is complete grasp the tail firmly at desired length and pinch the fibers off with the other hand, this gives a much more natural tail than cutting with your scissors. I would post some pictures of some of my flies and boxes but they are back home right now, and im attending school elsewhere.

Thanks for the compliment. The other guys who have posted pictures on here also have some great skills as witnessed by their flies. The first time I tried I almost gave up because I couldn't quite get the results I wanted, didn't understand the concepts and materials. Stuck with it, read a lot of the books I showed you, learned about all the different food sources and when they were most prevalent and learned from some accomplished tyers and asked lots of questions. There are some fabulous flyfisherman in BC whose products are simply pieces of art including Brian Chan (super nice guy, but soooo busy), Phil Rowley, Gordon Honey, Harold Lohr, Don Freschi... Too many to list. Every year I learn more and hopefully improve the quality of my flies. I consider my tying okay but want to continue to improve it. My expectations increase the more I tie. The most enjoyment I get is when I see something in the lake I'm fishing, go ashore and try to recreate it and subsequently have success. That, and when the kids in our fishing club have success fishing their flies and even when their results are better than mine.

As a last comment, on chironomids try to keep them as slender as possible, building a small tapering cone behind the bead head leading to a slim body all the way back to the tail. An couple of good examples are the second picture of Hunter1993ap's post on page 3 and Slee's bloodworm on page 4. Keep up the good work, I'm getting pumped for the spring season (damn, it's still 3 months away).
