Thought I would post this since it is winter and there aren't that many interesting hunting stories lately.

Didn't get out too much but in mid October my wife and I went to Iskut for some work she had to do so. We didn't try super hard but had a good time, and I was able to shoot some grouse to take home. We saw a few animals but saw hardly any moose sign in the spots we checked.

Kermode bear on the way north.

Nice looking meadow but no moose.

At least we got some grouse with the 12 gauge my dad bought me when I was 15 years old, my first real gun.

Around Terrace we have a one week season running from October 20-26 if you don't get and LEH tag so my brother a friend and myself went into a spot where we have gotten them before. We all worked into an area, then split up and slowly worked our way to an semi open hillside. I worked in farthest to the right it would rain on and off which is actually perfect for this kind of hunting. I had made to an area that was about as far as we would want to pack a moose out but went a bit further, there were big clumps of poplars but you could also see really well. Ahead of me behind a group of trees about 50-60 yards away the rear end of a moose was all of a sudden there, he must have been bedded there and sensed me. He was off and running but I couldn't get a good shot at him I grunted at him a few times and he stopped but was behind some trees I had to take a few steps to the right to clear some trees but he was off quickly again. When he disapeared behind some thicker trees i had nothing to lose at that point so I ran hard to cut him off, as I came around one group of trees he popped out from another clump under 50 yards away this time I was able to get one good shot into his chest as fast as I possibly could with my 35 Whelen. He took of hard but I knew he wouldn't get far.

The recovered 225 gr Nosler Accubond and a sectioned bullet to compare with it.

Thanks guys, this is a tough time of year on HBC so it's nice to have something to look at besides sheep threads and political threads that eventually get locked :) TSW, you are right there is something that really gets the heart pumping when all of a sudden you are face to face with a bull.

Maybe someone else has some hunting stories from last year they could also start. Oh, and spring bear can't come fast enough this year :)

Nice pics and story Gerrygoat. Thanks for posting.
Good to see the Accubond results. What kind of velocity with the 225's out of your 35?
I've got a couple boxes of Accubonds I'd like to try in mine. I was getting about 2750 with 225 partitons before the groups started opening up.

Nice Pics and Nice looking moose. Brings up an interesting thought. It appears to be a big fork with a sticker on each side? The right antler sticker seems barely long enough as a point. So during the spike/fork season would you be able to see that and would you shoot?

According to my notes the load is 60 gr Varget which is 1/2 gr under Nosler's max for 2763 fps 10 feet from the muzzle from a 22" barrel. Really like those Accubonds but the Partition is real good too.

You can't tell from those pics but it would not have been legal in a spike/ fork season it is a 3x3. This picture will show it better he definitely had cool antlers.
