a friend of mine in abbotsford had one like that in his yard a couple of months ago. pretty neat. Is hair color in deer controlled by mitochondrial DNA or y chromosome DNA? just curious

Don't let these guys give you a hard time, Jason. It's true - deer that live in areas of high snow accumulation change their coats in winter. This is why you seldom see them after the first heavy snowfalls of the year. It's basically the same camouflage that rabbits use. The deer in this picture has probably migrated down from the high country and is starting to change back to his darker coat.

How "HIGH" do you have to be to see these deer that change colour like rabbits

This is what happened to the Mulw deer population in region 4. With no snow to speak of, the winter-phase deer stood out like sore thumbs.
I understand it was a bit of a slaughter.
They're still in recovery mode......

We used to have a deer that looked like this living on our farm in maple ridge. I also do a lot of work up Harrison Lake and see a few up there every winteron the west side.

This is so correct. Thats why all the deer in Saskatchewan turn invisible after -30 because it gets to cold to even be white. There are thousands of white coloured deer on the praries up to that point.:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen :

Ah, that's why there are so many deer in 8-15 but I never see 'em (see OK mule deer survey).
Looked it up - "Piebald deer (partially white) are from a recessive genetic trait and the deer usually become more prevalent due to overpopulation of a deer herd."

Nope nothing on the face...just a crappy cell phone picture. And this is an Abbotsford deer.
Was happily munching some greens on the side of the road.

I have also seen a deer like this in abbotsford, in the forest near the sumas save one foods, where the homeless usually camp out. I was just driving by, I thought I was seeing things!!

Yes There is a deer that lives on lower sumas mountain in the bush behingd the grocery store that looks like that its not a winter colour it looks like that year round.

It beds in my buddies back yard and it is a blacktail,
Historicaly in the times of lots of fresh logging and not so many dog walkers and cylces my dad and i used to hunt sumas mountain every day and we have seen a few deer that looks like that.

Interesting on deer changing colour in winter I have seen more colour phased deer in winter and early spring than any other time.

PIEBALD -Personally I was not aware that there was such a word!
A “piebald” black bear was caught recently on camera in Washington.

I was lucky enough to see a piebald buck in the rut quite a few years back. I almost didn’t know what I was looking at. Took me a few moments to believe what I was seeing.

yes deer have winter coats that they shed in spring, no it’s not white. It’s just a slightly different colour to their normal tones, but thicker and warmer.
