Hey,

One of the guys I work with was up hunting grouse in 6-15 and came across this little bear on a dead cow. He wasn't sure how the cow died, as all of it is still there. I hate to even guess, but I'll hope it was a train kill or something.

Anyhow, he got within 20 feet of this bear (in his truck of course) and the thing never left. He just drove by, took a picture and kept going, and said the bear never gave any indication of even thinking of leaving.

I thought it was a great picture to show that not all bears eat just berries and skunk cabbage, like some people believe. Even the young ones are onto meat when they can!!!

Great picture - it does do a great job of illustrating how theyll scavenge anything they can get their hands on.

I might be wrong, but on the left most side of the picture, around the ribcage of the cow, it looks like some leaves/forest floor are on top of it. Maybe a black/grizz bear burying it a bit?

Regardless, as you said, hopfully it was killed by something besides a stray bullet...

Agaucher, I was wondering that too, and couldn't really tell from the original picture if the cow was buried or not. Not a comfortable feeling for a black bear if he was sneaking a bite from a grizzly kill. I'll ask the fellow that took the picture to see if he remembers this, and I'll get back to you.

Black bears will also burry their kill or road killed animals. a friend of mine back east shot a buck and founf it two days later. we went back to get the hooves to make a gun rack and the deer had been moved 100 yards and was covered in moss by a bear that claimed the carcass. So black bears will cover up their meal. I shot a bear last fall that we later found out was feeding on another bear. He had covered this bear as well with leaves and dirt.
If you look closely to the left of the pihttp://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/3marc_with_two_bear.jpgcture behind me you'll see the second bear covered in leaves and dirt.

Tonto, I assume you mean after it's been cut into a nice round steak, braised, then simmered with mushrooms and diced tomatoes, served over wild rice, right?

Nope, that bear will take it's time with the feeding and doesn't care how long it takes the calf to die. That is one of the prime differences between us and the animals, WE CARE! and peta sucks. lol Fred
