Thinking about repowering my 18' tunnel jet. Anyone have experience with Johnson's etec 40/30? Other suggestions in the same size.
i have Yamaha 40/30 jet on 14' G3 Jon boat it will go 40 km/h 2 people on it, but for a 18' i will be under powered for sure, for jet go for the biggest that boat is rated for
on a good note Yamaha 40/30 nice and quiet on 40L of gas it will make over 100km

Notice that I am RE-powering. The boat is '93. I am running a Yamaha 40, two stroke triple of the same vintage so about 25 equivalent. 45 is the max rating for tiller mount and it has been up and down lots of rivers lots of times. The only time it lacks is with a whole moose etc. so we usually make multiple trips in the tougher going.

Oops, I mean't Evinrude E-tec.
so you are going to switch from prop to jet. Jet will lose 30% of power, so my yamaha is more like 40/25. a friend of mine bought mercury 25hp jet for his 14', 3 people on it and we got past by a old honda 9.9 lol going up river, you have 18' boat. 40/30=25hp it will not be fast, and you will be running that motor wide open all the time, more fuel and stress. Jet likes to suck in a lot of leaves in the fall, be ready to stop, clean, stop and clean same more, especially in very windy conditions. I would go with at least 40 hp at the pump for this size of a boat.

No not going to prop, this is a tunnel jet hull. I'm sure all of you guys have more experience than I do, but I'm committed to bumbling on in my own way. I am currently running a Yamaha 40 powerhead(1993). It is getting on in hours, so I'm looking to replace it with a newer jet of the same general power. Evinrude makes a 40/30 jet in the e-tec. I'm interested in specific reviews on this unit.

stay away from the e-tec on the jets .
your much better off with the FI fourstroke . also the power would actually be 66 to 70 % of the powerhead so you closer to 26-28 hp.
Two things to look at are transom weight allowable and the hp figures .
You might want to look at the 60 /40 from either merc or yamaha .
merc rates thier engine at the pump so the 40 hp is a 60 powerhead http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/jets/fourstroke-jet-outboards/
. Yamaha goes by the powerhead so the f 60 is the 40 hp at the pump http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/products/products.php?section=ov&model=3801

Dealer got back to me yesterday to tell me that Eninrude isn't making outboard jet combos for sale in Canada at least. What is the problem with the e-tec? I have a buddy with an e-tec 40 prop that has been good for several years. 4 strokes are in the mix but I'm looking at both. I have had this boat for a while, as I said above, with a Yamaha 40 jet. The boat is rated for a 45 powerhead max with tiller steer. I plan to stay with tiller so maybe a light 50 at most. 30 % loss of propulsion is the claim by Outboard Jets. I haven't put a 25 prop on this boat to compare, but I believe 30%.
