Well I live on Vancouver Island and we have no coyotes over here as far as I know. I recently posted a thread on Van. Is Hunting to see how many people from the island went to the mainland to hunt them, so far 0 responses.
So how about you BC mainland hunters, how many of you put in some time to go coyote hunting, I see a couple of posts here and there.
Also, as I have the bug to go coyote hunting this year, what do you do with your hides and what are the regs on that matter, I could find nothing on it. I hunt buy the book but I don't really have any use for the hides. Can you sell them or could I try and find someone to give them to?
Hope somone can help me out here, also any other tips very much welcomed.
Cheers Roscoe

There's a site that Bartell helps run, something like Canadian varmint shooters or the like, pretty good stuff from Canooks like us. Anyone got the link? I can't find the sucker now.

Also:
Great advice on all things shooting, esp Coyotes: http://www.varmintal.com/

Do you mean predatorhuntcanada.ca ? I hunt them all the time and I do not save the hides. From what I have found southern BC hides are not worth a lot on the open market, you can legally sell them BTW, but I found it was way more work than it was worth to me. I used to have a trapper in Winfield that would take them but I can't get hold of him anymore. You could try the BC trapper association to find a member near where you are going to hunt and see if he would take them off your hands. I just gave them to my guy in the round and he took it from there. I sent a message there myself but haven't heard back from anybody yet but I just started hunting them for this season a couple of weeks ago so haven't been too worried about it. Just 5 so far this year, I think I have finally got the population around here down to reasonable numbers:mrgreen: If and when they let us hunt wolves here I will be keeping the hides for sure.

I give the hides to a trapper buddy of mine. He says they're around 50 bucks this year. Most trappers don't want them though, too much time for the $.
All I ask for in exchange is that he helps me skin out a wolf or cougar if I get one. Probably given him over a hundred over the years, and he's skinned 3 wolves for me.

Not much else to hunt this time of year.

Not that I would like to do it, but is it legal to just leave them in the bush? I just want to understand the rules fully. I mean if you get a mangy one or one that is shot up to bad, what would you do with it? Just don't want to break any regs. Thanks for the input guys, hope more is coming. Cheers Roscoe

$50 bucks for a southern BC coyote hide? Where is he getting that?? Are you in the northern part of the province? I hear northerns go for lots more $. Last time I checked, last year, they went for $17-25 down here. Even at $50 it's not a money maker considering all the work involved. I use a .243 so that I blow big holes in them and then I don't feel bad about not taking the hides. I leave them to feed the ravens and other carion eaters. I do take some heads for the skulls but that is about it.

Yeah, northern BC.

If they have mange don't handle them. If they're in really rough shape, they're crowbait.

probably better to burn it if its mange . you can get some nice prime hides down here also. its alot of work for a few sheckles.

So, I am taking it that it is legal to leave them in the bush?? I could not find anything in the regs that mentions it. Can anyone clear that up for me? Cheers

The simple answer to your question is that you MUST take the hide. The other portions can be left.

The explanation is here.

To be by the book you have to take the coyote to your dwelling place. After that it's up to you what you do with it. It's not very practical to skin them in the field.
I deliver the whole thing to the trapper.

I don't shed hunt much but I do see some not bad bucks. The girls and I have a deal, I feed them all winter and then they bring some guy over in the fall and when he gets too clingy for them I take care of him, lol.
