This is our groups second season ice fishing, and I think we are starting to get a hang of it. We have gone on two trips till now, and are planning more

The first trip in December was to "no name lake" :-D which produced very well...the best part about it was that for two days, there was not a soul around. The fish were biting and the weather was perfect. here are some pics pics of the trip

This is the first evening, managed these in less than 2 hours between 3 people.

This is the second day, again less than 3 hours fishing and we almost got our limit

Nice work, I must say ice fishing is one of my favorite ways to fish. People who don't do it don't really understand how it can be fun

The second trip was this last weekend to the more known red lake, in kamloops....The perfect place to catch some great eating brooks.

This time we were more prepared, and got a ice fishing tent. and what a good investment, as the fish were biting very soft and we would have missed many of them if we couldn't see them.

The ticket for these fish were worms, they had no interest in shrimps or anything else that we offered. These fish have got to be one of the most beautiful species out there.

Here the first evening we only managed 3 fish, but the next morning we had 8 fish and 4 small ones released by 10 am. The best fishing was the first 1.5 hour of light.

There was talks that someone had caught a 7 pounder on Saturday, and I personally missed big one. There are some monsters in that lake right now, and they seem to be only active the first half an hour of light so get there in the dark if you want a shot at them.

No need to tell you guys how great these fish taste this time of the year.

Hopefully more to come as the season goes on.

you will be hooked, just one suggestion is that make sure you take as many different baits as you can....also, don't overdue the jigging. best of luck

So for a rookie ice fisher, what kinds of baits are to be used?

Depends what your going for... if your going for brookies and rainbows bring along shrimp, worms, lil berkley powerbaits.. I;ve also heard ppl do well with chicken skin. Never tried it though. I have best luck with shrimp and worms. Pay attention to your rod/line as somedays they'll try to yank it down the hole and somedays they'll nibble and you'll barely be able to feel/see it.

I used to do alot of ice-fishing for trout back in Manitoba, and beside what bait is posted above I also caught alot using mealworms. should be able to buy them at a petstore.

Also, I have heard that some flies can produce when the fish are not biting bait...I have not tried it yet, but I will next time.

Another thing that worked for us was when we got our first few fish, i gutted them and used the little shrimps they had eaten as bait...caught 2 or 3 using that bait
