how old are the batteries, or how long have they been in the units?

Also what type of batteries [brand] are you using?

both cameras were purchased this year... a few months in both cams before they started leaking

I would fault the batteries, not the cameras. They were purchased by the camera manufacturer who knows how log ago and arecheap to begin with. I've seem this in remote controls and thermostats too.

I suggest cleaning up the units and trying again with better quality battery. Hope that solves the issue for you. Good luck.

I have no experience with game cams yet but by the end of this week I'll have two 'Unit' Stealth cams as my first cams to try, hope they are waterproof.

I have never had any problems to this date with leaky batteries you must have got a bad batch of batteries ??? I always use the duracell battries in my trail cams.
