A 30-06 will kill one dead as a doornail any day of the week, and I wouldn't hesitate to nail one with said caliber. Though that said, traditional wisdom from serious dog hunters says a small/fast bullet designed for sub-deer sized critters is the ideal (ie: .17 Remington, .223 Remington, 22-250, etc).

Although not a coyote hunter I have read on Firebird's site that another good choice is a 243.....but I am NO expert.

I would tend to think a question would be are you wanting to keep the pelt from it?

30.06 will kill 'em, depends why you are shooting them. If you want to keep the pelts, smaller bullet, I use a .243. We also "dispose" of them on my buddy's ranch as pests and for that I use the rifle of the day. Whatever I feel like bringing out, my 7 mag works well, but the bullets are far more pricy than the .243 or even my .270.

30-06 of course will work, but will always leave an exit hole in the hide. if you're just killin' em to get rid of some, then any cartridge bigger than 22 mag will work.

I do not think the 243 can be beat for a long range coyote/wolf cartridge, loaded with bullets between 55 & 87 grain

for a fur friendly cartridge, the 204 ruger, 222, 223, 22-250, or 220 swift are great, when loaded with bullets like Hornady Vmax or Nosler Ballistic Tips. the 204 probably would be better with a regular soft point, which Hornady now loads in their 45 gr offering.

For the wolves that I have taken, have all come from my 30-06 and 180gr bullets. As long as you do a lung shot no major hide damage, but for yoto's I would use a 243... All the ones I ever see are when I am out big game hunting.
